I just heard Will Self on radio4 describe the desert development in very unsympathetic terms.
I know loads of people who go there for a holiday!
One actually went snowboarding in a giant shed!
I always wondered why anyone would want to build on sand on the coast when sea levels are rising.
We now know how giant follies come to be buried in the sand.
I have lost any interest in financial matters while you were away as the quality of other writers' contributions lacks that "je ne c'est quoi" you seem to bring to the party.
They also seem to have an axe to grind or someone's message to give.
Your helicopter view is rare and appreciated.

This tells us what lengths Home Office will go to get their tame & ignorant politicians to distort the facts, the evidence and the information, in front of parliament where, as mentioned, it cannot be "actioned" and questioned in a court.
I hate these people and the way their lies eat at our society.
I just watched another episode of the "The Thick of it" on the BBC iplayer.

As in; he (Johnson & all his Home Secreatarial predeccessors except Blunkett, who while blind seems actually to be a bight more insightful)) has no idea what it means to add up, subtract, or divide (except perhaps to rule) as in; poor management practice.

"Only one advisory committee.."!?
The one where a sizeable chunk of society get marginalised,criminalised & imprisoned for a relatively harmless activity / behaviour which if decriminalised, might actually give this Govt some credibility with the floating voters who accepted their (wrong) view that 24 hour drinking would give us a continental style drinking culture.
Remember the texts to all the 18 year olds before the '97 vote.
We are all 12 years older and a great deal wiser.
The Home Office wants to keep as much CRIMINAL JUSTICE in everyday life as it can, otherwise the Power and Money fade away to Health and Social Care.

These ideas originate with religiously motivated individuals and groups with huge mounts of unelected power and influence.(House of Saud, Scandinavians, WASPs etc).

Not one but two major rows 5:31pm on 02 Nov 2009 Nick has a political view that seems much more tolerant of the incompetence of politicians than Fergus does of the social consequences of the failure of the latest in a long line of failed Home Secretaries.
Could this difference be seen as going native with their respective reporting tribes?

The inability of politicians to adopt a rational approach is mind alteringly worrying.
It scares the bejebebels out of me to know that if they are getting this so wrong, (something I know something evidentially about) what the hell is going on with everything else I know less about.

They (the politicians) are clearly deluded.
They "believe" there to be good reasons to ignore and reject strong evidence.
The precendence for this in history is legion.
It's not for no reason that the Mental Health Act doesn't apply to members of Parliament.

Maybe "we" are a tad paranoid.

But, as Prof. Nutt (and some of his ACMD colleauges) know,
"Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!"
It can only be delusional thinking that makes someone believe that despite all the evidence they should keep on doing the wrong thing.

We have ample evidence of a collective, delusional mental set with the members of this government (I am a socialist and weep to write this), starting with Blair's hidden religiosity, and with their beliefs and behaviour over Iraq, WMD, Globalisation, Bilderberg, Climate Change, Credit Crunch, Banking, Free Market Economics,the abandonment of workers rights, and now the imprisonment of minor drug users and suppliers when their detention wouldn't otherwise warrant a caution, under the old classification.
Something is sickeningly wrong when a PM and 2 Home Secretaries can bully a whole country on the basis of their (deluded) belief system.

We all know the only way to stand up to bullies is to face their behaviour down collectively and not to allow them to isolate individuals.
Support Professor Nutt and his colleagues, or it'll be one (or all) of us next!

The Prof was trying to get a debate going so that the confusion could be aired, discussed and the general public enlightened.
The public are already confused about these arbitrary classifications and would be much better served by a policy that differentiated risks and harms from all the substances we use.(Legal and illegal)

Never let vested interest ( Home office and Criminal Justice lobby, prisons, Police ,lawyers etc) get in the way of evidence and knowledge.

BIG ALCOHOL'S heavy hand at work here it would appear!

Nutt faces sack 5:09pm on 30 Oct 2009 The Criminal Justice lobby, of which the Home Office and all it's current and ex cronnies are past masters at spin, deceipt and obfuscation, have no time for honesty, rationality, and tempered discussion.
Smith's appearance on the telly was a sight.
Not bitter then?
"The thick of it" all over the egg on her face.
Is she still Home Secretary?
Did she have her nose in the trough over MP's expenses?

Prof Nutt has, by his paper, http://www.crimeandjustice.org.uk/estimatingdrugharms.html (this was offline as I wrote this) has drawn a line in the sand for the rest of us to review and reference the evidence, the known facts and the likely comparisons.
The fact that he said "alcohol" is so comparativeley dangerous is what probably helped seal his fate, as both the Chancellor and half the MP's rely on BIG ALCOHOL to fund their extravagances.
We've had 25 years of beating back the BIG TOBACCO lobby, but BIG ALCOHOL still has it's tentacles firmly wrapped around the political ball sack.

Harms from all behaviours should be linked to the risks.
Then you (we) can start writing some rational knowledge-based legislation.
That might then limit the need for lawyers (politicians), police of all persuasions, prison systems, and Blogs like Mark's which get everyone going.(Well done again, Mark)

That's the trouble with mass communication.
We get what they want us to get.
They:
Politicians(Knife crime springs to mind!)
Journalists, (PR companies, lobbyists, newspaper tycoons, media owners)
Religious nutters with lots of money and influence.(Bilderberg)

The Scots attempt to get a public-health influenced price per unit alcohol policy in place is a graphic description of the power and influence of the "they" in action "spoiling" the rational approach.

Declaration: I used to work in the "addiciton" Industry, helping people to stop and stay stopped from drinking dependently. Now retired I am happy to be divorced from the nonsense that is International and National policy on all sorts of substances and behaviours.
