Good job it's a long-term goal-because they've got a long road ahead of them selling the idea. First they'd have to show (a)how it would support itself (b)how it would deal with the job losses that would be caused by the UK public sector's withdrawl and (C)that it could survive a major crisis like the banking crash without UK taxpayers support. Judging by the posts on this blog they're not having much luck. Last but by no means least, they're going to have to convince the majority English-speakers to vote for it in a referendum. Given the way Plaid have pushed for Welsh language rights I can't see that happening somehow.

Happy Birthday ... nearly 12:52pm on 02 Sep 2009 Rhodri Morgan has been a faithful servant to his constituants and to Wales as a whole. I don't agree with some of his views but I can at least respect his sincerity. I hope he has a long, happy and prosperous retirement.

As to his successor, at one time the only likely candidate with any obvious energy or get up and go was Jane Davidson, but as she's now decided to abandon ship. That leaves Jane Hutt, Edwina, Andrew and Carwyn as the front runners. All in all they aren't exactly overflowing with Obama-like charisma or hope for the future; so unless a backbencher with these qualities suddenly emerges and sets the contest alight I doubt if we'll see much, if any "Change We Can Believe In"
Looking to Holyrood 12:24pm on 02 Sep 2009 The view from the public gallery on my one and only visit to a debate said it all - one AM was reading a newspaper, another was surfing a news website and a Minister was doing paperwork. One or two others were chatting to each other. Others were listening to the debate but I got the impression that they wern't exactly hanging on every word that was spoken. All in all I wasn't impressed. If AMs don't show much interest in proceedings how can they expect the rest of us to?
Pull! 11:44am on 31 Aug 2009 I see a lot of comments and ideas about boundaries, our status in Europe etc. Once again I don't see any viable suggestions as to how an Independent Wales would be financed.
Lights and bushels 09:29am on 24 Aug 2009 On the subject of bilingualism, given the recent success of both yours and Vaughan Roderick's blog would it be possible for you both to occasionally swap places? That way the non-Welsh speakers could also enjoy and debate Vaughan's articles and the Welsh speakers could discuss Betsan's blog in their first language.
Responses to Megrahi release 8:00pm on 20 Aug 2009 Let us remember that Megrahi was not the instigator of this outrage, merely his hireling. The real villain of the piece is President Gaddaffi who ordered the bombing. This is a man who has been responsible for causing murder and mayhem world-wide long before any of us even heard of Saddam Hussein.

We would do well to remember that this was not the the last bombing in Britain he was responsible for – remember the ship Eksund which was found loaded with arms for the IRA? Unfortunately earlier shipments got through and, as a result the Semtex plastic explosive he supplied helped prolong Ulster’s agony.

It is also worth remembering that,like Saddam Hussein he was making a determined effort to develop nuclear and chemical weapons; a fact which came to light at the time of the Iraq invasion. However,instead of being deposed he was offered a chance to come in from the cold and rehabilitate himself.

As a result, the man who’s weapons caused untold numbers of deaths in the west will now be sold western arms. His oil industry which helped fund his evil deeds will be rescued by western money and expertise. Unlike Saddam Hussein he will not die on one of his own gallows, he will, instead be treated as a faithful ally and be allowed to subject his own people to more years of oppression.

Megrahi will very soon end is days, either at home or in some corner of a Libyan hospital. The man who sent him on his murderous mission and gave him the means to carry it out will live on, more secure in power than he has ever been.
All things bright and beautiful 10:01pm on 19 Aug 2009 Re. the removal of my posting. I can't imagine that it was removed for congratulating Betsabn and Vaughan on the obvious success of their blogs so it must have been for repeating Messrs. Lowe and McArthurs comments (asterisks included!)on the Assembly. Given the fact that this comment was included in Betsan's article I feel that this is an example of hypocracy and double standards and I protest in the strongest possible terms!
A Welsh Warrior 10:08pm on 17 Aug 2009 Doesn't it occur to the likes of Mr Flynn that, having thrown the Taleban and Al Qaeda out of Afghanistan we owe it to the Afghan people not to walk away from them. If we walk out the Taleban walk back in - then it's back to women being banned from school and work, public floggings and executions and, worst of all, Al Qaeda having the whole country as their base again. In other words, Private Hunt and all the other fallen soldiers will have died for nothing.

We knew this would be a long struggle when we went in there, just as our fathers and grandfathers knew that WW2 would be long and hard. They didn't give in when the going got tough so why should we run from an enemy that is as fascist as Hitler was.

As for the so-called anti-war demonstrators, I have vivid memories of them at the Cardiff Tattoo where they regularly prostituted their right to free speech by abusing the very people that put their lives on the line to defend it! Some of those on the receiving end were Welsh Guardsmen who had survived Bluff Cove. You're as sickening now as you were then!
