Climate doctors say 'feel the pain'... 09:43am on 13 Oct 2009 Taxing people for CO2 emissions - basically slapping tax on electric and tax on gas would work if the economists are to be believed. The hitch right now with insulation grants is that they don't apply to 'awkward' installations - chalet bungalows etc. I want to improve the insulation in my home - its cold! - but it is going to be a hard slog.

The current grant system also has a reputation for increasing the price of the insulation etc by the amount of the grant - this needs to be stopped.

We really need cleaner electricity generated here - it doesn't help that nobody wants wind turbines anywhere nearby. It was stunning to go abroad this summer and see how the other countries do it. Lots of wind turbines - lots of solar on houses.

Clean power generation - and storage - are the way to go. We may need to arm twist councils - sure we don't want turbines in areas of natural beauty but as the country in the EU with the most wind and sea renewables (solars never going to work for us here) we ought to be taking the lead and not sticking our head in the sand.
Goodbye "Knock-off Nigel" 11:02am on 02 Apr 2009 Certainly the antipiracy adverts enforced at the start of DVDs were driving me up the wall. Its the sort of thing (alongside unskippable adverts) that really made me consider piracy.

Reward the legitimate consumers, don't punish them. This is a victory for common sense.
Canvas and the connected home 3:48pm on 12 Dec 2008 The problem is the content, once that is in a universal format that everything can play the rest will follow.

Broadband does need improving, but if you download stuff first - and don't stream then even a slowish connection will be fairly reasonable.

Is there any REAL reason I can download film X on a PS3 or film Y on a 360, but I can't do the opposite? Its all legalities and companies buying the rights to distribute. Imagine a world where a Samsung DVD player can play BBC programmes, but a Sony one could play ITV and Channel 4.

Unfortunately for the media companies - the end user has decided that this isn't good enough. They want the content they want, now, on the devices they already have. They want to pay for it, quite often they can't because it hasn't been released here. So people go to the pirates.

The end user is moving at lightspeed compared with the media companies. In the world of technology they are very far behind, moving at a glacial pace.
Festive Germans still prudent 11:53am on 08 Dec 2008 The Germans are doing exactly the right thing. Browns attempting to create another bubble to save his skin at the next election.
Banks: The new welfare dependents 10:29am on 13 Nov 2008 The government has been pulling the same, disasterous, trick that over stretched homeowners have been doing - putting it all on credit. Credit doesn't create stable economies, it just increases instabilities until they are doomed to fail.

No economy can grow every year, can you imagine the toaster industry growing by 2% each year? (2% more toasters, every year?) Pretty soon everyone would need thousands of toasters, each!

The UK needs to start exporting products. The county has been frittering away its money since 1983, haemoraging cash that had the band aid of credit applied to it.

The whole concept of debt driven economies is just the worlds largest ponzi scheme. Its great for China, terrible for the rest of us.
Map of the week - How will you die? 2:14pm on 20 Oct 2008 I would dearly LOVE to see the BBC reporting these sorts of statistics on the news and on Radio4. Perhaps one a day. "Today X people died in traffic accidents\Y from suicide\Z etc". Too often we get given the 'interesting' cases that only occur once in a proverbial blue moon.
