Have you heard a cuckoo? 5:31pm on 29 May 2009 We have heard a cuckoo in Kelvedon (CO5 9) every year since we moved here. Our 'local' one must have perched quite close to us near the River Blackwater on 20 April, pretending to be an alarm clock & waking us up about 05:00. It's still around sometimes near, sometimes further away and to-day was calling from fairly close by.

A big day at Westminster 3:30pm on 24 Nov 2008 Why does a Scot like yourself, whose English usage is usually better than that of the average Englishman, mispronounce the prefix simul- as sigh-mul-? This is usually the sound heard in America, on a par with fie-nance, coe-vert, pale-leeology to name but a few, where too often short vowels are lengthened anomalously and long ones shortened equally irrationally.

(2) Omega is pronounced 'oh-megger' by the educated or if you wish to be very pedantic, oh-'megger. Oh-mee-gar (beloved of TV health food adverts & similar soi-disant gurus) is, I believe, an Americanism on a par with ske-leetal (skeletal), se-reebral (cerebral), pale-lee-ography for the accurate & learned pally-ography (pal(a)eography& coevert (covert—an alternative form of covered, like burnt/burned; learned/learnt &c). One of their strangest habits is to make short vowels long & long vowels short, though I will grant them the ability to pronounce jaguar correctly (zhag-war (rhymes with car) and not jag-you-are and to accent kilometre on the first syllable and not like most TV presenters & personalities to turn it from a unit of measurement into a measuring instrument, like thermometer. I wonder when we shall hear of a
mill-'immeter or a sen-'timmeter.
