Draw you own conclusions as to the outcome of this scenario.

I'd better say something about sharks as it is the topic. I reckon we have more to fear from the corporate sharks circling looking for a feed at our expense. Now the taxpayer has to feed them as well. I wonder how long the supply of tucker will last.

Glimpse of the future? 11:26pm on 18 Feb 2009 Some of the comments here reflect on the ability of any inquiry to properly address the issues and put forth a sustainable answer to the problem. May I say it has all happened before.
I am reading a book written in the 1850s where SanFransisco was burned to the ground. The population at that time was around 1000 and 300 buildings were destroyed. An inquiry was held and the town rebuilt but in a few years it was all repeated.
I cannot help but draw parallels with this current tragedy.
Those that choose to forget history are bound to repeat it.

Resilience amid the ashes 7:06pm on 10 Feb 2009 Nick I wish to concur with other posters who have heaped praise upon you for your reporting of this tragedy. Sometimes the English language has not enough words to adequately convey the enormity of this event.

In all the coming years as a juorno I hope you never have to report a similar or even a worse event.

This is probably the BIGONE for you Nick.

There will be many more stories to come as people rebuild their lives. This will take years and sadly some may not make it.

I cannot imagine how one could cope with after a lifetime of sweat and toil having nothing but the clothes on ones back. Add to this the loss of life of friends and family is just beyond comprehension.

Look forward to more reporting from you Nick in the years to come.

M18, I'm sure everyone has seen the flicking of a lit butt out the window and yes they should be named and shamed.

Personally the sooner the complete ban on smoking in cars is legislated the better.

Is the casual discarding of a lit cigarette butt which starts a bushfire an indictable offence, namely ARSON?

Arson is a very serious offence and suggests a deliberate act with malice aforethought.

Since Nick started this topic maybe he could sus this out given his large list of contacts he has undoubtably collected since gracing our shores.

At least the labor government hasn't put children in jail.

You seem to be insensed that your darling political party was kicked out bigtime and rightly so but this topic is about wildfires so I suggest you stick to the subject before you accuse all wildfires of deliberately lit by labor voters.
Hunting the fire-starters 8:06pm on 02 Feb 2009 I've been a resident of this world for more years than I probably deserve and I must admit I grow more cynical as the years go by.
I concur with post 1.
I have a feeling the people responsible for fire prevention use the fire bug accusation to try and minimise the perception with the public that once again they have failed to carry out the necessary precautions to minimise the risk.
These traumatic events happen every year and nobody seems to learn the simple methods of protecting their property.
The general public have lost the sense of self preservation. The most important human sense of all.
The notion is if things go wrong the fire brigade will be at my door a few minutes after I call for help so I don't have to help myself as the government will do it for me.
The government has a lot do answer for in propagating this notion.
I have never heard anyone say "you are responsible for the protection of your own property". This is a simple enough thing to do.
I have a 10 hectare property and fire prevention or minimisation occupies my mind ALL of the time.
