Utegate: the smoking gun which backfired? 09:16am on 23 Jun 2009 That nice Mr Shakespeare had it right: "Much Ado about Nothing". And it's all we are currently hearing about on news/current affairs programmes. The only people who are in any way interested in this nonsense are the politicians and the media who report on them. When will they all get round to proper governance again?
Remember the first time? 5:25pm on 31 Mar 2009 "I was there, at Wembley, in 1966"!! For all the games except E v Mexico. I gave my ticket to my Dad. I remember the Argentine captain Rattin...He had to go! And I remember Alf Ramsey preventing Cohen from swapping his shirt with an Argentinian. They really were "animals" in that game. As for the final, did it cross the line? I was right behind that goal but it happened all too quickly to tell. But the World Cup memory that is seared on my brain is England 2 W. Germany 3 in 1970. I watched that game in a Left Bank bar in Paris surrounded by Germans! Oh, if we only had had a Keegan, Lineker, Shearer or an Owen in that tournament! But if England bossed extra time in '66, so did the Germans in '70.
Meeting Alan Bennett 10:23am on 04 Mar 2009 I think all those who are in thrall to Alan Bennett should see that wonderful Hale & Pace "Yorkshire Airlines" sketch. Where I live (Sydney) he would be described as slightly up himself.
The people's plinth 10:13am on 04 Mar 2009 Ernst Gombrich says "There is no such thing as art, there are only artists". I disagree. I think art needs two elements: Imagination and technical skill. The latter is missing in this case. Does that mean Duchamps was not an artist? Mmmm. Good point, but time has worked in his favour. In this case I don't think it will work in favour of the artist

Thus spake the great Ernst Gombrich, the author/editor of the seminal book on art, "The Story of Art". This work in Brussels would appear to fall into that category. Imagine Marcel Duchamp being commissioned today to provide a work to commemorate the French presidency of the EU!! I suspect he would just produce his famous urinal and merely add a few Euro banknotes disappearing down it! What more need be said?
The stunted country 08:59am on 16 Oct 2008 Nick, I have been saying for ages now that we have at least one too many levels of government in Australia and the level that is superfluous is State Government. That was brought home recently in NSW with the departure of the unlamented Morris Iemma and the appointment of Nathan Rees as Premier. As the Sydney Morning Herald put it, NSW is now run by the C-Team.
As for tourism, I regularly find brochures for Queensland in my copy of the S.M.H. so a lack of state governments shouldn't prevent the various tourist bureaux from hawking their wares. But I still like the "Where the bxxxxy hell are you?" campaign.
