All that happened could/should have been foreseen.

Dimbleby was, I thought, particularly at fault.
Nick Griffin on Question Time 08:53am on 23 Oct 2009 It was unfortunate that almost all the questioning centred around the BNP. It was not a normal QT.

I doubt that very many of the 'white working class' will have watched QT - after all it's generally pretty boring for folk not into politics - but those that did will probably have felt some sympathy for Nick Griffin, given the way he was harassed.

Map of the Week: Addressing educational underachievement 1:23pm on 19 Oct 2009 I'm troubled by your implicit assumption, Mark, that the responsibility for changing this state of affairs is primarily the school's. Surely that's a cop-out. Parental influence (or otherwise) must be the main factor.

And I do agree with #2 and #3 that there is too much emphasis on formal academic qualifications here. A plumber with no GCSEs but holding down a good job is surely in a different league than an unemployed drug addict also with no GCSEs?

Whilst I'm not a a Labour voter, it seems to me that, in the absence of the societal pressures which historically came from being part of a 'community', the politically correct developments over the last decades that mean (ASBOs apart) that 'nuisances' have to be treated with kid gloves and the influence of the media and modern communications developments in showing miscreants that they can get away with bad behaviour, the involvement of the state is an unfortunate necessity ...

118800 and a web revolution 1:39pm on 14 Jul 2009 I frankly don't see what the fuss is about - 118800 appear to have a procedure which answers privacy concerns and gives people benefits but very little downside.

All these emails going round are just mass hysteria from people who should know better and obviously have never taken the trouble to actually look at 118800's website to see what actually happens.

And why you should be so smug about Working Lunch's 'excellent' program when it was simply another instance of journalistic scaremongering is beyond me.

And to answer #2 - anyone's phone number that might appear in 118800 was already in a directory somewhere anyway, or it wouldn't have been used by them. And (while some collectors of such data surely have questionable practices) in most cases the person concerned will at some point have ticked a box to say that their number could be kept and used.

And no, I have no connection whatsoever with 118800.
Does Europe need hedge funds? 11:14am on 09 Jul 2009 What will banning them achieve when they can just relocate to (insert any other location here) and still do exactly what they've been doing on the UK stock exchange?
Can we afford the carriers? 10:22am on 30 Jun 2009 One generally overlooked aspect of this argument is the impact of any cancellation on the shipbuilding/defence industries capabilities.

Shipbuilding capability in this country has - in common with many other sectors of 'real' industry - declined precipitately in the last 2 - 3 decades. The capability and skill/knowledgebase that enables us as a country to construct these ships would probably be lost completely if they were cancelled.

Do we really want to take the risk that in 10 years time, when - whoops - carriers are seen to be essential to our military after all, we have to get the French or the Italians to build them for us?
