Was Charles Darwin a racist? 5:49pm on 15 Feb 2009 Augustine - my point it that where people are basically supportive of someone they make the effort to provide context and nuance, rather than going straight for the "Darwin was racist" approach. Your own post #37 uses expression "reinstating a holocaust denier" which is entirely untrue. The Pope has removed excommunication, in the same way it was removed of the Eastern Orthodox and Anglicans in 1960s by Paul VI. Williamson hasn't been "reinstated" as he was never a Catholic bishop to begin with. Williamson is a long way from becoming a Catholic bishop. In fact, as a direct result of the Pope's actions his own people have looked more closely at him and he's been removed from his post as director of seminary in Argentina. The same sort of thing happened after the Regensberg address, with many genuine Islamic scholars addressing issues of violence and Islam.

Pope Benedict is a good man, who towers above those who attack him, revealing their own racism with their attacks on his German roots.
Was Charles Darwin a racist? 02:12am on 14 Feb 2009 Funny, William, how all the nuancing and contextualising of Darwin's "racism" is wheeled out. Perhaps a bit more thought could be put into comments on the Pope.

Hussein Obama for initiating dialogue with Hamas or Iran. They think they're all experts on the Catholic church when in reality they know nothing about it. Who gives a damn about a priest who resigns from a secondary school because a university has a new Opus Dei chaplain? I have absolutely no doubt the school was much better off without him. As for Latin America - a load of Marxist clergy were stopped in their tracks by Rome - I call that a victory for sense.

Pope tells Holocaust-denier to shut up or ship out 01:15am on 06 Feb 2009 This has been said elsewhere, but we have to remember that lifting an excommunication is not some endorsement or welcome of people. It can be a way of opening dialogue. Remember Pope Paul VI and Athenagoras lifted excommunications of each other back in 1965. No one would pretend this was Rome welcoming the Greeks back - but it was a way of saying "we are not enemies". Pretending the Pope is a holocaust denier, linking it to his German nationality is simply a misrepresentation.

Having said all that, I continue to think it is ridiculous to criminalise holocaust denial. Free speech is able to deal with it without resorting to the courts. Holocaust deniers just come across as ridiculous to most people.

Hitler wasn't a Catholic. The Nazis hated the Catholic Church. Pius XII is a saint. And all the liberals protesting over the rescinding of excommunications are the very people who would most protest at the imposition of excommunications. Hypocrites and liars.

You know that this story is a very complex one; you know the history of excommunications, yet you chose to lead with this headline, as if the Pope has gone out of his way to welcome a holocaust denier - it's a shameful piece of tabloid journalism and I expect better from you.
