I'm feeling more and more like one of those sci-fi Human Batteries every day, except I'm hooked up to produce financial gain for my inhuman overlords, not electricity.

Well, I for one Welcome our New Robot Masters.

So if you have a strong immune response -- ie are a healthy adult -- then you're at extra risk from tipping over the edge.

Hay is right, it is too early to panic about this yet. The infection is definitely spreading -- if it's in New York and New Zealand, it's almost certainly also in Beijing, London, Paris, Dubai and other major hubs -- but the lack of significant US deaths so far is an encouraging start.

The next 48-72 hours will make it all clear.
Should the banks back Britain? 11:10am on 07 Apr 2009 Aggressively predatory behaviour on the part of the banks is precisely why the entire system should be nationalised -- so that if bankers are behaving like rampaging monsters, there is some public recourse.

A bank destroying a perfectly viable business should be a national scandal, not business as usual.

We're stuck with the banks, in order to function financially. We've paid through the nose to keep them alive.

They should be likewise stuck with us.
The Battle of Broughton 4:40pm on 03 Apr 2009 #6, you're rather missing the point. Given the world-beating density of CCTV cameras and the current rush towards ID cards, super-databases, biometry, and police calls to watch your friends and family like hawks for 'suspicious' behaviour, getting incensed about Google Streetview is rather like moaning about a mosquito while leopards are gnawing at your ankles.

Is Google Streetview invasive and creepy? Well, maybe a little. It's also a fascinating, and potentially invaluable source of social information for future generations. But it is most definitely not peeking through your (or anyone else's) curtains, and it is absolutely the wrong stalking-horse to be getting worried about.

If you want to object to something, please, in the name of all sanity, object to the rise of our Surveillance State.
Time to hug a banker? 12:07pm on 17 Mar 2009 Sympathy for the Devil, Robert?

I don't think so.

This isn't about shaming decent people out of banking. There aren't many decent people left _in_ banking -- it's been a magnet for greedy, fraudulent scum for far too long. As it currently exists, the industry is toxic.

It needs to be inoculated against profiteers and fools whose only interest is getting rich. That means rewards have to be controlled from outside -- you don't trust the fox to run your hen-house.

If what remains can be world-class, great. If not, we're far better off with no world-class industry at all than with an industry that's world-class at destroying our society's foundations. And if that means we have to shave a bit off our noses (and our belts), then it's well worth it for a more sustainable, fairer life.

Perhaps you'd be kind enough to share your opinion on exactly how much of this rampaging debt we the taxpayers can actually take on.

Docking bankers' pay 12:56pm on 08 Feb 2009 This is great news, honestly. I know that the financial sector always expresses concern about a talent drain, but to be frank I'm not in the least bit convinced that "high status/pay = great talent".

Looking at the industry, it seems to me that the correct equations are "high status = well-placed chums + wild greed + crushing ambition", and "great talent = unimpressive pay + exploitation".

If this move flushes the oligarchs out of the top for good, because they can no longer earn ludicrous amounts of money in the sector, maybe we'll actually get some talented financiers in their place who are more interested in keeping the world running that they are in just eating it.
Wikipedia is censored 4:02pm on 08 Dec 2008 This is a very frightening development. I had no idea the UK's internet was censor-firewalled, and given the rights creep that has been happening in other areas, the precedent is alarming. We trumpet on sanctimoniously about China, Saudi and Dubai, but this shows we're no different.

And to all those happy to use "It's all for the Kids" as an excuse, you should know that any pedo not already locked up will already be routing all internet traffic anonymously and offshore, so the IWF doesn't stop anything criminal, it just censors _you_.
Conflict over copyright 12:06pm on 27 Nov 2008 This is a very disingenuous article.

Firstly, longer copyright is almost entirely in the interests of the big record groups, and would do very little to help any session musician.

Secondly, session musicians do a job of work for hire, and know it. They have very little creative input to a work. In what sense do they deserve a share of the creative credits? I do a broadly equivalent job as a writer-for-hire, and neither expect nor receive royalties. If I want royalties, I'll take the financial risks of writing my own original work...
