Excitement in Chicago 08:34am on 05 Nov 2008 Congratulations to Obama and his supporters - a well run campaign, far more dignified than the opposition, and possibly a sign for the future that people don't want negativity, they want inspiration and hope.

Now comes the really hard part (as if the campaign had been easy!) and Obama must turn the words into deeds and become the inspiration he has promised.
The citizens of the US have made their choice and now the world will be watching. As one keenly interested Brit i am eager to see what the promised change will be

Good speeches from both candidates tonight - is there a new maturity in the wind?
McCain's lost battle 08:28am on 05 Nov 2008 I've just watched John McCain's concession speech on (British) TV - the man was gracious and dignified and should be congratulated on the message he gave out to his supporters and the world at large. Although i felt that Obama was the better candidate (and i'm pleased at his victory) i can't help wondering how much closer the race would have been if John McCain had conducted himself throughout his campaign in the same manner he graciously conceded defeat. I hope he continues in this vein to inspire his fellow american politicians to act in a spirit of mature and constructive co-operation - there must always be hope

It seems to me that saying you don't like one candidate is only going to benefit the US if the alternative candidate has something constructive to offer. John Mccain may have high ideals and good intentions but he has clearly lost his way (or been misdirected by those running his campaign) and has entered a downward spiral of negativity.
Wouldn't the best outcome for the US be to have two candidates trying to show their best qualities, rather than the current, rather sad state of affairs where obfuscation and artifice hold sway?

The people of the USA have achieved some remarkable things in my lifetime, and i will not give up my optimism that they can do yet another remarkable thing...vote with their intelligence and judgement, and defy the voices that seek to spread fear and insecurity

I don't know...it's a wild idea, but it just might work!
The candidate as Ordinary Joe 8:21pm on 12 Oct 2008 GoonerPetronius (17) you make a reasonable point, and it would be unfair of anyone in or outside of USA to suggest that you have consistently elected inadequate individuals as President
However, the last 8 years under GWB and the prospect of Sarah Palin as VP are certainly sufficient to raise the concern that intelligence and character haven't been high on the list of desirable qualities this century
Many of the examples you cite show that the american people are more than capable of electing intelligent and charismatic leaders (many of whom have shown genuine "world leadership" qualities). What concerns me and many others outside of the USA is whether that will be the choice you make this year, or if (as I fear) our western soundbite-realityTV culture has dragged everything down to the lowest common denominator
I hope to be proven wrong in November (and i'm counting on US common sense to do it!)

We europeans (and i am proud to consider myself so) don't hate americans (i'm generalising, but this is my belief)
However, we are ever conscious that you have held a considerable amount of military and economic power since 1945, and therefore cannot be ignored in the affairs of the world
Alongside this we have to consider the effect that your economic and military (and cultural) power is having on world affairs as these factors influence lives across the globe
We are all familiar with the notion that USA often presents itself as the leader of the free world...in which case it is not unreasonable for the rest of the world to hold high expectations of our leaders
Your nation holds great sway over world events and the rest of the world can justifiably expect that you will use this influence wisely and soberly
The current election process for POTUS is a significant part of this and i would consider it a reasonable expectation that when you, as a nation, are recruiting for such an important job that you would want to find the candidate most qualified and capable, and not just one whose soundbites play well on the latest news bulletin

The sad thing about the current election process in USA is that it repeatedly veers towards the lowest common denominator
We might all hope that with the growth of technology, the internet, available new media etc that we would all be well informed and thereafter balanced reasonable individuals. However, election processes on both sides of the Atlantic in recent years shows us that when any party is in a hole they all too easily resort to mud-slinging or fear-mongering to find an easy way out
As a British citizen I obviously have no say in the US election, but as a citizen of the world i feel a desperate urge for good sense and clear thinking to prevail (in all territories) and for politics to move to a higher ground based on reasoned arguments and public service that does just that - serves the public
Is there any chance that this can be achieved?
