The rise of the English South Africans 5:55pm on 05 Nov 2009 Just a general comment.

Assuming that fan is English, you cant really compare supporting a club (spurs and arsenal say) when both would probably support England.

I have a problem with it being called the England team when it is, in fact, the team representing England and Wales. Perhaps calling it England is being xenophobic..... or am i being daft?
Capello can plot World Cup glory 5:33pm on 10 Sep 2009 Firstly, can’t agree more with Phil on this one. 4-1 away and 5-1 at home is really very good against a side who i think we all felt were simply a better team than us last time round. There’s plenty of reason to be optimistic.

Who will be picked remains to be seen, we can all see on current form who's doing well. But, Mystic Meg aside, none of us can see into the future.

I like the starting 11 as it is, with James in goal, Rio for Upson and that's about it. Maybe Walcott starting, maybe not. Having either him or Lennon running at you all night would be no fun at all. Having one of them come on as a sub in the last 25-30 minutes...?

Someone mentioned the perennial GK problem. I might suggest they're a little younger than me as I remember quite clearly when England were regarded as having the best in the business - Shilton, Woods and Seaman?

People are worried about the right back slot, but having been extremely lucky to watched Brazil and Real Madrid play a number of times, I can assure that generally their full backs are such in name only. I'd be more concerned if Rio doesn’t get fit and maybe, just maybe Woodgate?

As for the booing of Eduardo, it only shows Wenger to be spot on with his assessment. It makes Eduardo the scapegoat for what is a universal problem. He is now the face of diving and as such we the football fan should boo him. It's quite unfair.

The failure make successful strides forward following on from the Ashes cold possibly be pinpointed back to the whole Cooley affair.

I thought briefly that perhaps the celebrations were over the top, but in hindight the bus tour which now looks a bit embarrassing, would not have done so if we had pushed on.

We didnt capitalise on our success, starting with Cooley, followed on with keeping the Cricket on Sky and making it available to fewer people and the Stanford debacle. I dont believe they had the wellbeing of the sport when they made all those decisions. Purely financial decisions and in the longer term are, ironically, proving costly.

The MBEs out of this as that was entirely out of the ECB's hands... and who are we to strip Fred of his freedom to walk his sheep through the Burnley streets or whatever it was.
Vaughan leaves lasting legacy 6:03pm on 30 Jun 2009 Since 2005, you really have to take into account his knee injuries. That he tried to continue is no surprise, as is the decision to pick him.

Great captain and at his best a graceful and succesfull batsman.

Success of Sky was never a model for Setanta 10:05pm on 09 Jun 2009 Interesting article, i trust the irony of the big 4 voting for ITV isn't lost on them....

I think the problem with Setanta is that a lot of their original cpaital was made up of venture capitalist funding. The problem being that these investors want a sharp return on their investment, 8-10yrs isn't going to cut it, but that's how long it takes. Indeed Sky took a while to get going and the premier league saved them.

Setanta should have stuck with a small niche market that was relatively successful.

What i think this proves is that

a) - there is a market for niche players. i like boxing and would pay £5 pcm for quality boxing, but am not interested in a lot of the other offers.

b) - Perhaps the next best place for football is ITV or dare i say it, the BBC. If the government cottoned on to this, their ratings would go up pretty sharpish, n'est ce pas?
World champions return home 09:12am on 24 Mar 2009 Congrats go to the team and the 5 players picked for the "Team of the tournament".

Glad to see the iCC are combining the two T20 tournaments in the summer, at least the final is on the same day, please correct me if i'm wrong. Another good step for the game.
The lure of great stadiums 5:17pm on 12 Mar 2009 Been lucky enough to go to a few grounds at both ends of the scale with Cheltenham and Arsenal.

I loved the Villarreal stadium, the atmosphere packed in is incredible. We had tickets in the home end and the noise was incredible, especially as a lot of it was open-air.

Santiago Bernabéu was good, with overhead heating in the roof!

Couldn't help but feel Old Trafford felt a little underwhelming - perhaps becuase we lost!

With Cheltenham, i loved Kidderminster's ground - it had one long away end with a low roof. Great for a 'local' derby.

The best though? Got to be the millenium stadium. just brilliant and proof that you can build a 70k+ stadium in town with good travel arrangements.
The jeers and not enough cheers in Turin 07:21am on 09 Mar 2009 Perhaps some of the other athletes should up their own performances and this wouldn't be such a big talking point?

Why not concentrate on what's important? Underperformances under pressure.

Dwain lives and performs under the highest scrutiny. Thos who are not interested in athletics know about him and his story. Yet he brings out a performance on the big stage.

There will always remain the supsicion he is cheating, regardless of how many times he is tested. Yet he still carries on, when you hear other sportsmen complaining about the number of times they are tested.

Like it or not, Mr Cram, he IS a role model. We ALL make mistakes, it's how you return from them. He's not perfect, but he's stil out there trying to prove all his doubters wrong when he feels he still has something to offer....... which on this weekend's performance, more than most other athletes, he clearly does.
An Antiguan day we won't forget 4:01pm on 14 Feb 2009 I was listening to TMS at the time and yould hear the emotion and bitter disappointment in SIVAR's voice.

The world NEEDS a good West Indian cricket team and there's been some really good signs over the last few series. Australia really struggled to a victory over here when everyone thought it would be a walkover - a performance the Islands could be proud of.

Then the Stanford, which, however you feel about it, was the sort of thing they probably needed to get a few fresh faces at the grounds.

Then a superb performace to show us up in the first test - some wonderful bowling and unusually obdurate batting from the top order.

Then this - it's just really sad. Hope it all sorts itself out.... i know people have spent money to get out there and watch cricket, but i'd rather be on holiday in Antigua than here in rainy, cold West Wales about to watch my rugby team lose...!
