Why not just have the BofE print the money and give it straight to the Treasury?

Looks to me like this is the only way that the treasury will be able to fulfil their spending committment so why try to hide it with this pantomime.

Inflation here we come!

Lloyds have to cover the first 10% of write offs, that's about GBP25billion. I guess that this will just about cover until March 2010 before the then Tory government will have to deal with the really big problem of setting a budget when there is a large chunk of the rest to write off. Oh, and the GBP15 billion fee will probably be put as income in this year's budget, also Lloyds are unlikely to need to pay any Corporation tax in 2010-2011 because of their losses, thus exacerbating the problem.

I also guess that the opposition of the day will refuse to accept that the problems are anything to do with the previous administration, in the same way that they refused to accept that they received a golden inheritance!

The pressure for protectionism 00:47am on 31 Jan 2009 I just heard that anti-dumping legislation means that duty on imports of steel products from China increases by about 87% on Monday. Is that not a form of protectionism?

Why does GB say that his government believes in globalisation without protectionism when they are increasing import duties by such a huge percentage?

Why has this 87% increase in duty not been reported in the financial press?

Is 87% enough to stop the dumping?

When steel prices went up in 2006 and 2007 it was apparently because of the enormous demand from China's booming economy. It seems ironic that we should now have to protect against cheap imports from China!
The long and short of banks 10:23am on 23 Jan 2009 Crash should certainly go, but not until HE has been forced (probably by the IMF) to make the drastic cuts in spending that seem inevitable. Otherwise NuLab will just be able to say that it is Tory spending cuts.

We all know (rather too painfully now) that when you have borrowed too much there are only three ways to deal with it. (i) earn more, (ii) spend less, or (iii) go bankrupt (which also leads to less spending as you then have to live within your income).

The only questions are; when do we have to start spending less? and how are we to spend less without civil unrest?
Rose on pay and VAT 4:57pm on 07 Jan 2009 Maybe the VAT cut is intended to boost things in Q4 2009 when an INCREASE of 2.5% (or maybe a lot more?) will get people out spending well before the new year sales in 2010.

GB might have kept a lid on the PSBR but he completely missed that what really matters is how much the country borrows as a whole.

The time to pay down the debt has arrived and the question is who should bear the pain, those who have spent above their means funded by debt, or those who have lived within their means and saved.

I should have thought that, in order to protect future generations the (now apparently abandoned) rules of moral hazard should apply.
The sanctity of the Commons 2:27pm on 30 Nov 2008 I know something is wrong with what has happened, either with this government, the police, or the speaker. We must surely do something to preserve what we have, before it is too late.

As a member of the 'silent majority' I have, for the first time in my life, written to my MP (David Drew, LAB) to express my disquiet, and have said that I would join a public rally (were he to organise one) to be able to express my concern at what has happened.

Is this still allowed, or might the police be knocking at my door in a short while for knowing some civil servants, and offering to join a public rally that might be seen to be anti-government?
