Paradox of bank bailout 12:03pm on 21 Nov 2008 All these people asking for banks to be nationalised - can't you remember how badly nationalised industries are/ were run. Without exception. Think of Russians queuing up to buy bread or Muagabe printing extra zeroes on banknotes.

How is a Government guarantee of lending to small businesses supposed to work. Does it mean banks can lend as recklessly as they like and the taxpayer forks out for any losses.

Crazy.
Paradox of bank bailout 10:49am on 21 Nov 2008 Am I stating the obvious - banks operate in a competitive market. They will willingly lend where it is profitable. Is Darling pressuring banks to make unprofitable loans? Madness.

Every penny that this government borrows will eventually have to be repaid.

Take any objective measure - average income in the region, alternative employment opportunities and you have to agree that if you make a case for regional preferencial tratment then the preference has to be Halifax.

In any case, resourcing decisions are normal commercial decisions for the companies involved. They should be free of government interference which at best is well intentioned but usually misguided.
Bank of England forces bank shrinkage 4:57pm on 16 Oct 2008 We all need to face the fact we aren't as rich as we thought we were (especially Gordon).
The 'growth' we have seen in the last 8 years is an illusion created by borrowing £650bn. We are now dependent on international money markets. The international markets are concerned at the the risks these loans won't be repaid. The ususal laws of supply and demand apply. He who pays the piper calls the tune. In today's market those prepared to lend set the rate.They won't lend any more without a significant premium for risk. Would you lend to someone who has already borrowed up to the eyeballs and might lose their job?
The only way to break the dependency is to pay back these loans. Gordon needs to give tax incentives to people to save and disincentives to borrowing. Higher interest rates would help repay these loans quicker.
Gordon doesn't have the political appetite to face the fact we aren't as rich as we thought. He wants to borrow more to continue the illusion longer. He doesn't care about the long term - he just cares about keeping the feel good factor going until the next election.
Repaying these loans means either a lot of pain for a short period or a little pain for a longer period. Either way we have a lot of pain to look forward to. All Gordon's fault for allowing this borrowing binge over the last 8 years.
Spend, spend, spend? 10:59am on 16 Oct 2008 The problem is too much borrowing not too little. We have collectively borrowed £650 billion more than we have saved since 2000.
Brown hasn't given any tax incentives for people to save, has taxed >£5bn per year in pensions and encouraged a borrowing binge to prolong a feel-good factor. these debts need to be paid back.
Millions of first time buyers have been priced out of the market and don't ever have a chance of owning a house even at current house price levels - totally unfair on those first time buyers.
Of course the banks are 'hoarding money' - lending more, which they might not get back would risk their solvency - why is 'hoarding money' being reported as a bad thing - its absolutely vital that lending gets back to a more prudent level.
Government borrowing has got out of control and needs to be paid back eventually too. Right now isn't the right time to pay back the borrowings but when is? Gordon shouldn't have squandered every penny he could when he was chancellor. He should have been prudent and saved a little for a rainy day.
The international markets won't lend any more to the UK becasue they are scared they won't get the money back. Interest rates need to rise and tax incentives given to save money. Interest rates need to rise and tax disincentives given to discourage further borrowing.
