Giant borrowing payback looms 10:15pm on 21 Nov 2008 Did anyone ask exactly who we are borrowing this money from? If there IS anyone left in the world with true capital to invest, surely they can't be idiotic enough to lend it to Gordon Brown!
A fairer society? 6:13pm on 17 Oct 2008 Ask yourself - just how sustainable is all this debt when the economy is sliding into depression because of all the debt we have build up. Rich, poor, in the middle, it won't make a blind bit of difference. The most likely to survive the forthcoming turmoil are those who are self-sufficient in water, heat and food.

How long before the good old US of A defaults on their $trillions of loans? 'Cos when they do, and it really is when not if, we won't be far behind them. How much longer can governments create more debt in order to attempt to bail us out of the position of having created too much debt? Who will buy all this new-for-old debt - surely the Chinese and Middle East are starting to run out of money themselves!

Furthermore, we are already seeing massive declines in shipping rates - and if the ships ain't moving then neither is any of the stuff they usually haul around the world. The ships ain't moving because the banks won't issue credit notes, and the suppliers won't ship without a guarantee of payment. If there ain't any stuff to buy, it doesn't matter how much you have in the bank - you'll end up hungry and cold just the same and the depression will get worse.

All change at RBS 8:00pm on 11 Oct 2008 How's about we get back to real, proper money. Y'know, the one based on actual stuff - hard labour (physical or intellectual) and useful, long-lasting goods. Here's how to do it.
Join a time bank. There's loads starting up and although at the moment your "time" is not "worth" anything other than "time", that'll change soon enough.
Because pretty soon, local businesses won't have the "money" to pay for goods and wages (or there won't be any banks left to provide that type of facility) and will need another way to pay for these things. If those businesses start accepting "time" as payment from their customers, they can then pay staff and suppliers in - you guessed it - "time".
Because you can only earn "time" by actually DOING or PRODUCING something, the money supply cannot be vandalised by money-makers betting on the future value of stuff - the stuff is always worth the "time" invested in it (this should have the added side-effect of effectively eliminating interest. This is a good thing. Think about it.)

Join a time-bank - it makes sense.

Why bank shares are falling 10:46am on 08 Oct 2008 Robert - surely you must understand that lending more isn't the answer. Have a read up on Fractional Reserve Lending, look on YouTube for the "Money as Debt" video, work out how much imaginary "credit" money (aka debt) is out there compared to real money, read up on resource depletion at TheOilDrum and ResourceInsights and then see if you can explain how the heck all this debt will ever get paid back.
