Neither to scare nor to make happy, merely part of a larger reality check; possibly why so many 'mainstream' UK politicians defend the Union for fear of the lessening of their international credibility, whatever that is worth; with the increased possibility of said credibility being subjected to even more rigorous challenges than it is today.

The English politicians don't want Scotland, they need it.

Consider the options of the breakup of the Union and possibly the cessation of the Statute of Rhuddlan:

No more United Kingdom
No more Great Britain
No automatic membership of the E.U. for England and Wales or England
No automatic membership of the E.U. for Scotland
If Wales voted for independence there would only be little England
France / Germany would object to a continuation of England's E.U. status outside of the UK and insist on England rejoining considering their 'new' status
No automatic membership of the G8
No automatic seat on the Security Council
No Union flag
No Union Jack
No Union of the Crowns
No oil revenue from the Scottish Sector
The Armed Forces and their assets financed pro rata
Rent for Faslane Naval base to be levied or removed to England along with missiles and warheads.
Perpetual English Conservative governments led by the likes of William Hague, Ian Duncan Smith, Michael Howard or David Cameron.
'Just say no' 3:17pm on 19 Nov 2009 Willie Bain's smile seemed and continues to seem a bit plastic to me; that said I believe there were external forces at work to achieve that by-election victory.

Did not witness the aforementioned parading of Mr Bain; however I did witness the 'press conference' with the Secretary of State for Scotland Jim Murphy' Ian Gray Labour Leader in Scotland and Willie Bain' Westminster glove puppet; clear for all to see how the Glasgow NE Labour vote was mustered as was the case with the previous incumbent Michael Martin.

To the real meat of the thread; I don't think Craig Levine wants the job' but he would have to reject it in such a manner that he would be able to accept any future overture.
Devolution as evolution 1:48pm on 19 Nov 2009 Fear of the Nationalists caused this piece of sop to be added to the Queens Speech; best to appear to do something rather than clearly doing nothing seems to be the Westminster approach.

We truly are in the land of little talent when we look around Westminster and Holyrood.

Westminster:
Labour are led by a very clever man who is at best a good First Lieutenant or second man; the Labour ranks are strewn with nearly men and women.

Conservatives are led by an individual more suited to the celebrity circuits than the First Lord of the Treasury; the Conservative ranks are littered with nearly men who mostly seem to be fronting up Shadow posts until Conservatives gain power only to be replaced by what remains of Thatcher's Centurions.

Liberals continue to prove their irrelevance.

Holyrood:

The SNP are led by what is almost a one man band whose ranks are strewn with nearly men and women.

Labour:

I never thought Labour could produce a worst leader than West Coast Jack and they go and prove me wrong; a most unconvincing Leader with the Labour ranks strewn with nearly men and women.

Conservatives:

The most convincing of the opposition politicians; that said when you have little chance of gaining power you are never really thoroughly scrutinised.

Liberals continue to prove their irrelevance.

I make no apologies for holding this opinion but choose only to comment that this lack of talent in my opinion is due to the rise of professional politicians operating in a sphere where professionalism requires no official qualification.

God help us all!
