Maradona singing in the rain 12:19pm on 12 Oct 2009 I read recently that Kempes was openly questioning the absence of communication between Maradona and his team, in effect the players don't have a clue what's going on, what their role is etc - throw in some major tactical changes during a game, add a revolving door to the national side when players are capped, dropped, recalled after 10 years, given their first caps in their 30's etc and confusion rules.

Dunga shows way to Maradona 11:43am on 14 Sep 2009 Undoubtedly the team were struggling before he took over but appointing Maradona was never going to have a stabilising effect on the squad, as if the job weren't pressurised enough his actions and comments heap more pressure on himself: not content with merely questioning the playing surface at River and expressing his displeasure he goes one step further with his derogatory comments and observations, the River fans made reference to this with songs and chants at yesterday's game. His very public spat with Batista too.............oh and Diego's goatee.

South America's wayward footballing stereotypes 12:17pm on 03 Aug 2009 Slightly off topic..........Going back to England under Robson in between Mexico 86 and Italia 90 there was the little matter of Euro 88, they lost all 3 group games I seem to remember. This shouldn't detract from all of his achievements but it's been conveniently glossed over in the preceding days by pundits and hacks lavishing praise on him (probably many of them gulity of subjecting him to vicious treatment in the past) -a fair and balanced assessment of his career shouldn't ignore this.

South America's wayward footballing stereotypes 09:48am on 03 Aug 2009 Those who drool over the majesty of Brazil's football should watch the highlights of Mexico 1970.......closely followed by the highlights of USA 1994 (Romario aside) and the answer is probably somewhere in between. That victory shattered some stereotypes but also proved they could adapt.

Copa Libertadores deserves golden final 10:49am on 06 Jul 2009 Tim - any chance of you making a quick call to the deputy controller of the Beeb and getting them to stick the game on BBC3???!! I'll gladly pay my licence fee.

A great shame that Setanta has gone down the toilet (however bad their coverage was!) looks like we'll be at the mercy of the web feeds to catch the game.

Trouble blights Huracan's renaissance 12:33pm on 29 Jun 2009 25 - Joe Green. Yep I was thinking more about English clubs links with their violent fans especially post-Heysel/Hillsborough. But concur that many mainland European clubs have been less active in curbing problems.

Trouble blights Huracan's renaissance 12:07pm on 29 Jun 2009 15 - the trouble caused at English football was/is always by those outside of the system and clubs did their best to disassociate themselves from the hooligans. The lines are a lot less well defined in Argentina and many criminals make a very good living from their 'support' and associated activities hence the internal problems between fans of the same teams to try to control the business. Some clubs also do themselves no favours by employing some of these fans in official capacities when in reality they are nothing more than hooligans. Next year sees the introduction of an electronic ID/registration scheme for fans to try and curb the violence.

I must disagree on one point - English grounds are now the safest and most comfortable in the world to watch football but personally I think the atmosphere has suffered. Any spark of pre-match atmosphere is normally extinguished by a loud PA system playing music. Goal celebrations in many stadiums are also snuffed out by snippets of music ie James Brown samples. Dreadful.

Re the title either of the two will make a refreshing change, although I'd like to see Maxi Moralez win after his less than happy time in Russia.

Brazil's Confederations Cup dilemma 3:17pm on 19 Jun 2009 Re 46 - Ischia has left Boca Juniors by 'mutual consent'????!!! He was due to stay until the end of the season - 2 fixtures away but after the defeat at Indpendiente (3-0) he departed earlier in the week. Alfio Basile takes charge for the 2nd time within the next week or so.
