I fully endorse and totally agree with what aye_write has written at #640. What you propose is no longer an option in any case. A wave of anti-Scottish sentiment is sweeping through England. Have you read the racist Heffer article from the Daily Torygraph that you were directed to at #628? Whether you have or not, read the following quotation now, which is taken from an article in the Mail that will be circulating throughout England tomorrow:

"A passing black cab driver caught sight of the kilted men exiting the 270-year-old building [the Treasury, after a staff Burns Supper] and struggled to contain his anger. 'The Government has been taken over by the Scottish Mafia,' he said. 'Scotland has independence in all but name yet they swagger down here and decide what happens in England. And look how well they have done!'"

Blaming the Scots for your woes, which you have brought upon yourselves, of course, illustrates the futility of persevering with this poxy Union. Scapegoatng and demonizing the Scots in this irresponsibly dangerous manner is far more likely to kill it than preserve it.

More evidence of a growing wave of English demonizing of the Scots as a result of the economic decline of the UK is revealed in the Mail, which has an article reproaching Scottish Treasury officials for having a party (in honour of Burns) at the Treasury while English pride was dashed on the rocks as the UK economy fell off a cliff on Friday and while these guilty men, "some of them wearing kilts", quite brazenly celebrated, "oblivious to the country's economic woes":

"(...) hours later officials at the Treasury showed no signs of guilt as they let their hair down inside the building at the wine-and-whisky-fuelled Burns Night bash. There was little evidence of the gloom that has descended on the British economy as civil servants celebrated the traditional Scottish festival with a meal of smoked salmon and boiled haggis. The lavish do, held in the majestic Treasury building in Whitehall, began at 6pm and was still going at 11.30pm when the last few civil servants emerged to hail black cabs. By then, some of the revellers seemed a little unsteady on their feet while several female officials in cocktail dresses were helped towards waiting taxis.

Whether or not there really was such a taxi driver and whether or not he actually said what the Mail is quoting him as having said, this is what the mass readership of that newspaper will be reading tomorrow. There appears to be great anger about the passing of England's false prosperity of recent times, and the finger is clearly being pointed at the Scots, who are thus, it appears, to be the scapegoats for something that England is too proud to take responsibility for itself. The English are blaming us for their woes. This could indeed turn nasty.

We are living in interesting times, my dears. The foundations of the UK state are crumbling.
The narrative of the new political era 00:16am on 24 Jan 2009 Robin__Banks seems to be right about the UK going down. The Telegraph is forecasting a Depression comparable to the Great Depression of the 1930s!

An event such as this is bound to have serious political and conceivably constitutional consequences, which could well produce a further economic impact.

Watch out for once-in-a-lifetime events.

You think you've got problems. We are bigger than you, although you would not get that impression from the BBC weather map, but Scotland too is told day in and day out, week in and week out, that we are way too wee, too stupid and too Scottish to be capable of doing anything apart from playing football and getting drunk . . . and even our football is suspect.

Our culture, with which they are not familiar, is risible, they tell us, our education system is now inferior to the English one (if you can believe that to be even possible), our financial-services sector is no good because it has suffered from the credit crunch in much the same sort of way as have the financial-services sectors of other economies, our economy is no good and always will be, our oil reserves are not ours and would be of no benefit to us even if they were ours although they are invaluable to the UK, our legal system deserves to be bypassed and any objection to any of these witless notions only goes to show how wickedly nationalistic we are and confirms our unfitness to govern ourselves.

The Irish were on the receiving end of much the same sort of thing until the Irish Free State was created. We are still told by British unionists, in fact, that the Irish are not up to much and are indeed up some sort of gum tree because of the recession, which in point of fact seems likely in reality to affect the UK more adversely than any other state in the EU, where the prosperous Irish are currently being said to be such "a great nation" that all are seeking to curry favour with them.

Oh, I was foregetting. The constantly recurring principal theme to which we are exposed is that we are a drain on the resources of England, which, on closer examination, turn out to consist of quite a few of the resources that would be ours if we were independent. In spite of being no good at all and contributing nothing much worth mentioning, we are also told that, although much of England is said to be indifferent on the subject of Scottish independence, we must not go independent. Vilified for being allegedly dependent and berated for seeking to be less dependent by arguing for fiscal autonomy, not to mention flayed within an inch of our lives in the case of those of us who want to be independent, it seems as if we just can't win in the UK. Well, nobody can, of course, except the largest participant in the union, to whom let us sing praises and before whom let us all bow down in helpless admiration, because our lords and masters get so tetchy if we don't, as the Germans are finding at the moment, having declined to subscribe to the curious notion that the UK government is saving the planet by going into massive debt from a position of horrendously fundamental weakness: too weak, too stupid and too British to save themselves from themselves, far less save the planet.

I take your point, but I doubt whether that would cut much ice with the moderators. Bless their little cotton socks.

However, you have inspired me to change from U-Boat_thingy, the novelty of which has worn off for me already, frankly, to Dear_Diary. I'll see if they'll allow me to carry on under that name.

I thought of changing to U-Boat, again under the influence of your good self, because I'm not really a thingy sort of person, but it's taken. So, if you see someone posting as U-Boat, it's not me. It's an imposter.

Sorry to disappoint you. I am not James Murphy. Now you are one step nearer to discovering my true identity by a process of elimination. This will infallibly be successful if you just stick at it for long enough. Alternatively, it might be easier just to call me U-Boat_thingy. So I've decided to stick with that after all. It grew on me.

If there is anybody out there whose name actually is U-Boat thingy, I'd be obliged if you would declare yourself now so that I don't have to fall out with the BBC again on account of impersonating you.
