Legislative programme 4:50pm on 03 Sep 2009 Also...what extreme arrogance from the likes of Annabel Goldie to declare that this is a minority view and that only Salmond is interested in having a referendum. Unless she can claim to have actually asked everyone in Scotland for their opinion, to decide that she knows what we all think is unbelievable hubris.
Legislative programme 4:48pm on 03 Sep 2009 I can certainly understand the opposition parties being against independence. But I cannot understand how they can defend a stance of refusing the Scottish people a say on the matter in a referendum, coming as this does from MSPs whose livelihoods and professional careers are founded on a supposed support for the democratic process in a supposed democracy. Surely illogical! I do not, myself, believe that currently the SNP would get a yes vote, but it is clear that the opposition parties are running scared of just that eventuality. How can they claim to be democratic representatives of the people if they are fixing the result and denying the people's possible will? This smacks of good old "We know better than you what you want and you can't be trusted to choose for yourself..." paternalistic nonsense.
What caused the Amazon firestorm? 10:27am on 14 Apr 2009 firebird2100 seems to be unaware that Waterstones is actually owned by Amazon. It used to be be an excellent book store, but since it's takeover has merely become an Amazon clone and offers this reader at least no alternative choice at all.
Babes up in arms 1:35pm on 24 Dec 2008 albanach - when planning a trip out of town, surely leaving the baby at home with your regular babysitter, or someone reputable should be included in the plans? To leave this vital element to when you're actually in a strange town is scarcely logical!

I agree that it's ludicrous to take a baby to a panto and the sheer height of anti-social behaviour. Sadly all too common among parents these days, who seem to expect to be able to drag their offspring with them everywhere they go and the rest of us to put up with it.
The hi-tech election 2:59pm on 04 Nov 2008 Not that hi-tech! I've just watched Obama take 20 minutes to cast his vote. Could they make it more complicated? No wonder people are having to stand in line for 8 hours! Three cheers for little bits of paper and a stub of pencil!
Too 'European' 11:26am on 03 Nov 2008 Another thing I note - you seem to have been infected by the McCain campaign rather than simply reporting it, Matthew.

When I saw the headline: McCain Campain - Too European, I assumed that your report would be about McCain. After all, it's the McCain campaign you're reporting on, right?

Yet, just like the campaign itself, you spend your entire report talking not about McCain, his policies, his aims, his character, but about what's wrong with Obama.
Too 'European' 11:22am on 03 Nov 2008 Oh, what nonsense! They won't vote for Obama because of some vague 'difference' they sense, but which they can't explain. And that's not racism? I seriously doubt they'd find that difference in a white Democratic candidate. It seems fairly obvious that the difference they are trying so hard to find, yet are unable to vocalise is that he is black. Stop dressing it up as anything else. Sadly, many in the US will still twist themselves in knots trying to find a reason not to vote for Obama.
Unhelpful messages 12:50pm on 25 Oct 2008 I'm always baffled with claims that Palin has been good for the McCain ticket because she has energised the Republican base. But, hang on...these people are Republicans! So, presumably, most of them were already on board and their votes in the bag. It doesn't seem to be much of an achievement!

As for these news stories - it's about time the US press started highlighting McCain's hypocrisy. But, as other posters have noted, it will make no difference. Americans have an extraordinary talent for only listening to what confirms their beliefs, opinions and views. Everything else goes in one ear and out the next in case it disturbs the balance.
Sinister robocalls 1:18pm on 18 Oct 2008 What I find most ridiculous about the negative campaigning is McCain's attempt to make us believe that it's not him, just everyone else around him. In the debate, he states that he doesn't care about Ayers - and then just a few hours later, these robo-calls start. I suppose one of his staff just decided to do that on their own without telling him, huh? Same with letting Palin do all the rabble-rousing at rallies, while he tries to play the sane one. Sorry, but it's fooling no one, John.

As for Joe the Plumber - what irritated me most was McCain saying 'my good buddy, Joe' when he hasn't even met the guy!

What have I learned about McCain this month? That underneath the 'honourable hero' exterior he's a deeply unpleasant man, without honour, dignity or respect.
Superman or Clark Kent? 5:52pm on 17 Oct 2008 How dare Mr. Swinney compare Gordon to Clark Kent! Kent was a decent, honourable man, who worked tirelessly for the good of his community without trying to boast about it or take the credit.

Gordon couldn't be further from his twin!
