Will Lloyds' chiefs resign? 4:45pm on 09 Mar 2009 However anyone attempts to dress this up, as I stated before the merger was approved......

there was no sense in Lloyds buying HBOS epecially when it was clear they had too little time to look through the details correctly.

It was a very bad decision and the senior execs are as culpable as Mr Goodwin and co (in buying ABN). Equally culpable is Brown and his cohort that pushed the deal through.

Lloyds and HBOS humbled 3:46pm on 13 Feb 2009 Yep - bad purchase - a bit like RBS buying ABN. I could never understand the logic of teh purchase when no-one really knew what was lurking in HBOS (or LLoyds) and it slapped the face of better competition for the consumer.

Daniels has to go as his judgement is questionable.

The 'Government' took a knee-jerk reaction to a situation and ,ay. in doing so, have made things worse.....as usual.

This will not be the last of the 'horrendous' results
Making sense of the Crosby case 10:57am on 13 Feb 2009 Yes - whichever way its cut, it is definitely smelly.

Yet the issues around HBOS / Moore are still side issues I think. The core has to be a government and political and financial infrastaructure that is still more focused on how things look, their cosy personal relationships, and saving face, than getting to the heart of fixing things.

The Treasury select committee is a joke and so far, I still fail to see anywhere a concerted and considered approach to actually putting things right. The HBOS stuff is interesting - but a diversion from whats really important.

At present no-one in Brown's team is up to the job of coping with the current situation. Unfortunately there are no glimmers of competence in the opposition - the only possible exception being Vince Cable perhaps.
Why Sir James Crosby resigned 5:23pm on 11 Feb 2009 The central issue is that the government has had such a close relationship with Crosby they got him to release that report on the mortgage market - at a time when it was increasingly obvious that those in charge of the big banks during a relevant period, would be coming under scrutiny regarding their judgment.

It all highlights how clueless the government has and continues to be. The other lot are no better - just opportunists that will sieze on all this for political point-scoring.

What should be on the table is a blueprint for how to restore financial stability and credit markets. No-one, government included, appears to have any idea and frankly you get the impression they hope the Americans and China will pull us out of it.
Daniels sacrifices bonus 08:05am on 11 Feb 2009 The government is hugely compromised in all this. We still have to rely on voluntary 'giving up' of bonuses, rather than the nationalised institutions having some clout to just say no. Having James Crosby as initially a government consultant and then the deputy head at FSA is just ridiculous given the context of 'grillings' etc.

Problem is that the other government lot dont look like they are any better prepared to do anything constructive.

Also, one cant help being sceptical that this is the 'headline' but there is probably some other arrangement where he gets it all back .

How about all those bonus paymentsfrom RBS due to ABN staff being scrapped. Surely there cant be a genuine argument to pay 'contracted' payments when the institution is in such a financial state.

Of the numerous grillings of various great and good so far, what tangible and constructive wonders have actually come out of the 'work' of the committee?

Frankly I think any of its members should themsleves be put up to the light and examined as to what they are actually achieving.

The questions for the former bank bosses 11:45am on 10 Feb 2009 Is it just me who queries why 'Sir' James Crosby is nowhere near the firing line and instead is some sort of lauded consultant for the Government? How ridiculous is that? Instead pick on the boy Hornby...tut tut...not even trained as a banker...blah blah...when those that have been trained as bankers or whatever form of training exists for politicians, have proved themselves to be just as culpable.

My point being that if the government was really taking any of this seriously instead of dressing up a show to attempt to appease the masses, then I would have expected a different way of addressing things.

Having a few bankers turn up to say their rehearsed apologies is all very well and a start but no-one actually has a plan beyond that to kick-start wholesale markets, bank lending etc. All of them, governmment, board members of banks and their so-called consultants...are fairly clueless.

On Citi, there is a matter of hubris again, by the senior bankers. Yet Pandit is still there and so are is cohorts. Bizarre.

Obama - Tiger, Lewis and me 3:01pm on 05 Nov 2008 I think the media is just following the typical trend - i.e. even when someone is mixed race, generally in society they are referred to by reference to that part that isn't white - the intention generally being derogatory.
Daft and sad I know but in this case we cant blame the media.

For Obama and others, they are of course aware (having grown up and lived through the challenges) but they dont see it as an issue that defines them as people - which is the main thing. If everyone else lets them just get on with it without dwelling on whether it is a black thing or mixed race etc etc., that would be great ....but that isn't human nature.
