Soft landing 4:51pm on 01 Dec 2009 I feel slightly sorry for Ms Hyslop. The SNP policy on class size was always a bit unrealistic for the simple reason that education is the responsibility of the local council. If a local council decides to spend money on fixing up the roads or services for old folks instead of primary school teachers that is their right.

Was Ms Hyslop unfairly treated? Perhaps some should note the treatment of Ms Alexander a couple of years ago.

Apart from that Mr Salmond has now ridden to the front of his army to take control of the Independence Referendum. Any slip ups and Mr Salmond maybe facing his Waterloo.
Taking it to the max 4:43pm on 30 Nov 2009 I'm surprised Labour isn't sticking to "Bring it on". A defeat in a referendum would leave the SNP core policy in tatters.

Letting things drag leaves the UK in much more danger as after a couple of the years of the Tory axe desperation may set in and the SNP might win a referendum.
Tories tweaking their message 8:36pm on 23 Nov 2009 The Conservatives - economic recovery? After the devastation caused by the the Thatcher/Howe economic miracle (getting rid of heavy industry) how anyone can trust the Conservatives with anything except extermination of what is left beats me.
Microsoft and Murdoch: Teaming up to bash Google? 5:46pm on 23 Nov 2009 You folk who work for the BBC ought to realise that the BBC is also under attack.

1) The anti-BBC papers print endless stories about BBC salaries etc.The same Tory papers don't tell us about salaries at large media groups also paid for by PAY-TV subscriptions etc.

2) On various bulletin boards there are never ending posting about the TV licence fee and how high/bad it is. These folk never point out that the entry subscription for pay-satellite TV is much higher.

3) The Tory party has decided to attack the BBC in order to placate certain foreign newspaper owners. Imagine if a British Newspaper group tried to influence the next election in Australia. I am sure the language would be interesting. It is sad that Nu-Labour hasn't the guts to tell a certain Australian to stop interfering in our elections.

Of course the whole thing is the usual press conspiracy. Lots of crime stories to panic the public into having lots of police. Lots of police to protect newspaper print-rooms and profits in case the workers ever dare go on strike.

I don't always agree with some of the Trade Unions but Tony Woodley got a well deserved round of applause at the Labour Party conference when he tore up a copy of a certain newspaper.

If the BBC is closed down and some right wing trash replaces it would the last sensible person left please turn off the light before boarding the ferry to Calais!
Wise warning 6:46pm on 16 Nov 2009 Well at least Mr Salmond can visit the ECB in Frankfurt-am-Main. Imagine what what the Tory Euro-hate mob would say if Mr Cameron went there.

Maybe if the Tories get into power in Westminster, get very unpopular in Scotland then Mr Salmond will propose a referendum about joining the Euro. The Tories would go crazy and Mr Salmond would get a monster cross border argument.
New name for a new economy? 7:33pm on 15 Nov 2009 One thing we have to be careful of is that we don't end up with the worst parts of a Socialist Planned Economy and a Capitalist Economy.

We have little manufacturing left in the UK and hence can't take advantage of the recent devaluation. Food prices are rising. Planning permission for any sort of power station is a nightmare, ditto airports. The Europe hating press won't permit us to join the Euro.
There is one word to describe the British Economy. SAD.

I just can't help think that Glasgow East and North East are not that dissimilar and that the bye-elections were contested by parties who have not moved that much in the polls to produce such radically different results.

As Scottish football has been part of the national identity for years - was there any thoughts in Glasgow NE that the decline of the Scotland National Football Team and the dreadful performances of our clubs in Europe hit the underlying self confidence of folk in Scotland and hence the SNP vote?

Yes - presentation isn't the PM's best strength, please remember everyone moaned that Blair was all presentation.

I must confess I spoke to a Conservative politician a few weeks ago - he/she had some interesting thoughts - which I will not discuss in a public place as I wish to respect his/his and my right to talk without it being splattered all over the media.

I found your jibe about the Soviet politburo pathetic. Your attitude seems to be that I and others not allowed to occasionally support the Prime Minister. Indeed were I in the armed services I would be worried that this sort of tabloid coverage is encouraging the Taliban to kill British troops.
When politics matters... 8:15pm on 09 Nov 2009 The Tories who are complaining about the PM's hand written letter should be ashamed of themselves.

1) How many politicians would go to the bother of writing a hand written letter about anything? A computer print out is the norm these days! If Churchill had written to very person who suffered as a result of his Gallipoli campaign he would still be writing!

2) It is easy to spot and correct spelling/typos on a word processor. Hand writing is fast becoming a lost art/craft. It is all very well for elderly Tory voters to take half a day to hand write and check letters - a glance at the television often shows the PM in at least two or three places. The PM is very busy regardless of how people vote.

3) Do they want all politicians to stop talking to the public in case they are supporters of another party , decide they are insulted and go running to the tabloids?

4) To what extent did the press take advantage of a grieving person to run a nasty angled story about the prime minister?

5) Regarding armed services equipment - Mrs Thatcher's Falkland's Task force suffered lots of casualties due to rubbish/non-existent equipment. No complaints in the tabloids. It was all "Gotcha" etc etc.
Spending challenge looms 9:55pm on 07 Nov 2009 Brian are you surprised our politicians can't face economic reality?

Most of the Scottish public don't think for themselves. They buy and rely on a press which preaches non stop against civil liberties and human rights.

Extra police, teachers, doctors etc are approved of by the press. No criticism of this is permitted. Right wingers get extra police, the left teachers and doctors - glory to the devolved state!

Even negative remarks against football referees are punished by huge fines. Eternal glory to the suppressors of free speech in Scotland!

Compare and contrast modern Scotland with Poland (or the other people's republics) under communism.
