Hedge funds and VW: what a pile up! 09:17am on 29 Oct 2008 So the hedge funds are going to complain to the German regulator because the share price realistically represents the value of the VW company. And Porche have changed their position on purchasing the VW shares since the hedge funds drove down the price to make that change of attitude possible.

Much as I realise that hedge funds think the share price should be nothing more than an arbitrary number, similar to 26 red on a roulette wheel, it is difficult not to read this blog without a very broad grin across the face.

If they have "Bollinger bands" at the top of their graphs, perhaps it would be prudent to draw "tap water" bands across the bottom.

As well as being the British Chancellor in the 70's, he also once appeared on the infamous TV show "Bonzai" trying to set a world record for the number of pound coins he could fit into his mouth.

Worried ? Not at all.

Momentous Monday 09:10am on 13 Oct 2008 In recent articles I have seen the top city bankers described as "highly intelligent, highly motivated competative individuals".

My I take issue with the "highly" intelligent part of this comment.

People who devote their lives to the persuit of money must, by definition of their chosen career, only be "limited" in their intelligence.

If they were "highly" intelligent, they would be working as a doctor, for example.

The vast vast majority of people in the world consider money to be a representation of the time they spend working. Whether this is correct or not is not the point I would like to bring up - that it is the perception of 9x% of the worlds population is important.

The average world wage is about 2 dollars an hour....approximately.

So when we, these people, see one trillion dollars, that means 500 billion hours of work.

That is 90 days for the entire planet's population per trillion dollars.

Since the working population is probably 50% of the total, then .......

it takes half a year of the whole planet's population working to generate 1 trillion dollors.

From the 99% of the population who think like this to the 1% who don't - have a nice day in the office !
Why bank shares are falling 10:37am on 08 Oct 2008 Whilst this banking bailout is a top down sollution, may I suggest a bottom up sollution.

The "credit crunch" originated with people (not corporations or banks) selling mortgages to people who could not afford them. This is educated, relatively wealthy people (not institutions) trying to get hold of the money of relatively uneducated people.

Not very pleasant at all.

Since it all is about people (the institutions and banks are just a conceptual grouping of people) why don't you (the financial people) all stop trying to take money off people who are naive in comparison to yourself ?

Then we really may have a solution to the problem.

I agree with all of what you say except the last paragraph

...... the UK public remain very Eurosceptic, which is regrettable, but undoubtedly still true. This might make joining the Euro a politically-difficult exercise. The government could hardly turn to the public and say "we'd better join the Euro because things are so bad here", could it?.....

That would all depend upon how bad things were. Right now, then I agree that they could not. However the circumstances in which they could appear to be a lot more likely than they were this time last year.

My personal feeling is that the GBP outside of the Eurozone in an economic storm could be suicidal for the country.
