There seems to be a lot of people making the arguement that "it`s not fair to blame the public servants" and "why should they have to pay".

I'm not blaming the rank and file workers in the public service one bit for what`s gone on but everyone in this country has to wake and face the reality of the situation that UK Plc is in.

Public servants work for the state and in our case the state is broke!

Innocent people working in the Public Service have to face the same realities that innocent people in the private sector have been faced with for the past 12 months. I know many people in my area who are normal working folks who have been paying their bills and getting on with their business and certainly haven't played any part in the financial crisis. That hasn't prevented them from having to go to a 3 day work week or in some cases lose their jobs altogether.

why should those in the public sector be any different?

If the worse they have to suffer is a 12 month pay freeze than I think they have not done so bad - millions of other low paid workers in the private sector who have lost their jobs would snap your hand off in a second if you could offer them the same.

The long and the short of it is that the public sector is too big and too expensive for what the country can afford. This "not fair" arguement is rubbish. Since when has life been fair? If we all lived in a fair society things would be a hell of a lot different in 2009 than what they are!

Why is it that you automatically assume that anyone who voices objection to this Govt - and their management over the economy - is a Tory supporter?

I have been very critical toward the Govt on these blogs but I also don't feel the Tories could make any difference at this stage.

Gilts shock 4:19pm on 22 Apr 2009 The British electorate is more or less sleep walking towards as long as a decade of much higher taxes and reduced public services as a direct consequences of the Labour governments irresponsible management of the UK economy over at least the past 5 years, as the government has sought to change the rules in the face of failing to meet its own fiscal and budgetary targets that have now been altogether abandoned in the wake of the bankruptcy of the financial sector.

If Cameron and the Tories had been running the country for the past 12 yrs - and did everything exactly the same as Labour - I would have exactly the same opinion toward them as I do for this Govt.

You constantly want to give this Govt a 100% pass without placing a single once of responsibilty on them by saying it was a global problem so it was out of their hands. I'm a realist and I accept this is a global problem and there is a large share of blame to go around for the financial service industry. I don't put 100% of the blame for this mess on the Govt but I do feel they certainly played their part. It flabbergasts me that you believe the this Labour Govt is some kind of victim in this financial crisis.

Taking the example of the Canadian or Australian Govts - they didn't create the problems either and they are also feeling the effects. But they were better managed and the kept tighter regulation on their financial services. As a result they will be in a better position than us here in the UK a year or so down the line when growth does return. While countries such as Canada or Australia can rebuild and move ahead we will be stuck under an avalanche of debt. This is something we can hold Labour accountable for and which cannot be just dismissed a a "global" problem.

Are you living on the same planet as the rest of us? Thank this Govt??? Are you referring to the same Govt who told us they had done away with boom and bust. The same Govt who told us only a year ago we wouldn't even go into a recession? And the same Govt who told us only 5 months ago that we would be back in growth by the summer?

I'm sure people up and down the country will be queuing up to thank this Govt!

I think you`re right. How can we put much faith in whatever we hear later today from Darling as time and time again they have been so badly off the mark.

I'd say half the Labour MPs don't even genuinely believe that one. Brown could use you at number 10 - I heard he has a vacancy for a new side kick.

You always seem very quick to defend the Brown Govt and make the point that it is a "global" problem.

I don't ever recall seeing anyone on here trying to make the case that the Govt actually caused the problem.

This Govt have been at the wheel for 12 yrs which is a long time in anybody`s book. Do you honestly feel that they have done a stellar job in running the economy over that period and could not have done anything differently which would have left us in a bit better position?

I accept that there are other countries which are in a worse position but amongst the G20 nations we are worse placed. Would you not at least expect a little better housing keeping from a country that is the 5th largest economy in the world?
