LOL @ football manager! Tim all the managers use it these days to sign players! Last season Steve Bruce at Birmingham City bought some well reknown stars of Football Manager which didnt really work out but its a clubs main scouting network!

Yes we've won 4 games. 1 was against a team of part timers, 1 without their best player, 1 against a team whose red mist descended, and 1 against a team of borats.

I remember your article about rooney downplaying his talent saying he had peaked and it was time for a different approach, and rooney, much like beckham, has come out firing on all cylinders after being criticised.

Although, lets be fair, it was only kazakhstan and belarus. Although i am a loyal red, roonsters performances have been alittle overhyped (some saying his performance was his best ever, much forgetting vs croatia at E04). Maybe this is what we have come to expect from the media. Overhype can only lead to more criticism in the future.

Rooney did show some good passes, some good touches, and found himself in good positions. I think a few years ago he wouldve found himself straying offside for his 1st goal, but he has learnt more about being a 6 yard box poacher, it seems whilst being under capello, and this has helped his game.

For the pro gerrard lot criticising lumpard, both he and barry sat deep in the middle so that gerrard could roam from the left into a more central position (leaving bridge totally isolated at times and helpless when going forward)

And please can walcott be given a different role in the side. Hopefully by the next qualifier Hargo/ carrick will be fit (why capello never picked him when he was fit remains one of THE great mysteries for utd supporters), gerrard can move to the right or Hargo played on the right. I think walcott just isnt ready for international football. He never tracks back, leaving brown exposed, and his bundles of energy arent controlled enough on a consistent basis. He said that his favourite player is ronaldo. Well, he should learn what ronaldo has learnt. If you want the ball, and you want to win, you have to track back in order to go forward!

Anyways...lets hope roonster continues his form and keeps improving because he his by far englands best talent

Another well thought, analytical piece of writing on Englands failing. The problem was, everything was too simple and through the middle. This is why gerrard is crap in an england shirt. At scumpool...i mean liverpool...he just passes it forward to torres and they score, the wingers are their just for the fun of it.

Now lampard plays in a team where (now) the full backs get marauding forward so he actually passes to the wings. If capello wants england to play wide football and not through the middle, he drops gerrard and plays lampard barry against belarus. If he wants a player to get in rooneys way in supporting and supplying Heskey, he plays gerrard.

Simple.
Is Michael on his cycle? 7:45pm on 06 Oct 2008 Simple fact is, Owen is past it. He was all about pace and enthusiasm, and it looks to me like both have gone. Our frontline of Heskey and Rooney works well, if Heskey can score more goals. As for Downing, not a single person (probly not even southgate) knows what this guy is doing in the england squad. I would rather see Young there, but hey, 2 missed penalties and not a single good english performance means hes 1st on the squad list.

i said midfielders in the prem...than couldnt think of any good midfielders! There are alot of midfielders in the "work in progress" category than there are world class players. I think a team that would have Mascherano and Fab in the middle would be pretty formidable, and im a Utd fan. I would still have Scholes over Fab though. Simply because he is nigh on untouchable on a football pitch, and his pass vs AC Milan in the CL at OT to set up Rooney is one of the best passes ive ever seen. Granted, hes getting on abit and it will only be a matter of time before Fab overtakes him (unless somehow Xavi or Messi come to the Prem), but Fab still has a long way to go.

Flamini was hugely overrated. I watched him alot and the amount of times he gave the ball away on the edge of the area was pretty bad. I think he was a work in progress but he thought he was too good and left. Arsenal had their future enforcer in Diarra, but Arsene let him go to. Arsenal have alot of good youngsters coming through, not least Havard Nordtveit and itd be interesting to see if Arsene will play him as the DM or in central defence when the time is right.

As for complete player, that is Ferdinand, as complete midfielder, yes Fab is up there but theres alot of good midfielders in the Prem such as gerrard and essien.
Riquelme - one of a dying breed 1:36pm on 06 Oct 2008 The only english player that is similar to Riquelme is Scholes. Regarding Fab, he has said that he models his game on Scholes. Riquelme, Scholes and Fab can only play like they do if the guy next to them is a defensive midfielder who's prepared to do the running.

Thats why Utd have Carrick, Hargo, Fletch and suprisingly Ando who play next to Scholes. The Argies have Battaglia and Gago whereas Arsenal dont really have a midfield enforcer and that has long been their problem since the likes of Gilberto and Viera left.

Regarding Lucas, i've seen him play a few times and he hasnt really done anything spectacular. I think a South American going to Liverpool under Rafa is a bad move, seen as Rafa likes to rotate his squad for nearly every game. To adjust to the climate and game you need a sustained period in the 1st team, and i just dont see that happening for Lucas whilst Mascherano is there.
