Ideas for Autumnwatch 10:12pm on 11 Jun 2009 Do more on the CBBC, I started watching wildlife progs with my parents when very young and that interest last with you for life. Bill was very good on CBBC.

Is this blog post really worth doing? Over the last year it has degenerated in to a pro & anti nationalist troll match. There is little point quoting house rules if, when folks repeatedly ignore, them you do nothing.
Britain and the bike: a bumpy ride 9:22pm on 31 May 2009 One of the big issues I see is the pathetic level of traffic policing, cameras have replaced cars and officers so drivers run little risk of ever being caught no matter how badly they drive. Just as an example the number of cars with illegal window tints that obviosuly don't get stopped is astonishing.
As for BBC coverage, well I think it could make more of an effort, the level of reporting on road success is pitiful.

On a lighter note ... 1:48pm on 14 May 2009 BTW The young lady on the TV was not a reporter... oh no, She was a news reader! The reporters do the work, She reads that work for 90k.

Now do we think the readers who (if female) have to look pretty, be young (bring back Moira!)and be able to read, get paid more or less than the reporters :-)

Things like this actually matter, ask the poor sods from round me some of whom are still not back in their houses from the floods more than a year ago. We build over more land, gardens turn in to car parks, more rain is expected to fall on us due to climate change... so more houses will be flooded at enormous cost to insurance & taxpayers
First cheques, now jobs 1:14pm on 14 May 2009 I am off to phone benefit fraud hotline to grass up 600 or so cheats who appear to be taking taxpayers money they aren't entitled to.

I think it may be a while before we here the sound of MPs from either side berating benfits cheats.
The real question about waterboarding 9:46pm on 21 Apr 2009 Torture works. Yep, that's how over centuries we got all sorts of folks to confess to things they couldn't possibly have done. Even recent history has examples of Irish folks (birmingham & Guilford) confessing to planting bombs they didn't, image what more they could have confessed to with waterboarding

Next if terrorism justfies torture presumably Dick and Co would have no beef with the Brits doing the same to say Irish terrorist and a bit of extra-ordinary rendition of any overseas supporters would be ok too?
Given these are white people, have links to voting blocks and may even be Americans I suspect Dick would have clarrify his stance on this.

Torture is wrong. Centuries of effort shows you get people confessing to things they didn't do and it is only done to those without power by those with power...those with power don't agree if you torture their citizens.

I don't believe myself but this is one occasion when you have to hope there is a god and a hell where Dick and friends get to ponder over an eternity the rights of torture.

I believe Sean Hannity is safe however as I hear even the devil has standards :-)

Culling and scowling 10:23pm on 25 Mar 2009 IN case you had me down as bunny hugging veggie I am not, I live by the peaks on a diet of lots of fresh shot rabbbit, hare, pidgeon etc.

It pigs me off when politicians do things for which there is NO sound basis. It is the arguement of; we must do something and this is something (see Gordon Brown)

The decent studies suggest a cull will not fix the problem. To help farmers needs a co-ordinated policy that seeks to reduce ALL transmission paths on a long term basis. But this is difficult because it might challenge things, eg trucking animals across the country so it can be labled 'Welsh', poor biosecurity, easy movement of livestock etc

So instead what you get is a cull, a sop. TB numbers will drop in the cull area for a while, surrounding areas may see an increase. Then within the cull area the levels of TB will return, transmitted through cattle movement, badgers(?) returning, etc and in the end we'll be no further forward reducing TB.

Why not ask; What is your long term strategy? Where is the evidence? What is the action plan ?What are the timescales? Who will monitor and publish the success data? Optimism and 'let's give it a go' is what your leaders want to hear because it means they are of the hook for another few years.
