As a married man i can only confirm the findings of the 1962 survey are still accurate!

On a serious note though - i am sure that in 47 years time the notion that we shouldn't use "technology" to help referees get decisions right will be seen as laughable as the "it would be unwise to televise matches at any time" statement.... and our grandchildren will be laughing at the FA/FIFA/UEFA now as being out of date and stuck in their ways.

Great blog by the way - really interesting and a nice change to lots of similar Man United / Liverpool centred blogs that we get on here
Benitez under spotlight after Champions League exit 10:01am on 25 Nov 2009 Rafa has got to go... i cannot see any footballing or results based defence to keep him in the job. The only reason he won't be sacked is because he will take a £20m payoff.

Sadly Rafa has had 5 years of very average results with the HUGE exception of winning the champions league.... sadly though that can no longer be seen as enough to keep him in a job

Rafa out - Hiddink or someone else of that stature in ASAP for Liverpool to return to where i want them to be...

currently 7th in the league, out of the title race, out of the Chapions league at the earliest possible point, more poor work in the transfer market, more poor tactical decisions (often based around dropping/taking off Benayoun).... all in the year that was supposed to be "the year" they came back.

sorry but i know Liverpool fans are the most loyal to their manager in the whole country and i am sure some of those fans will now tell me that Rafa is great and he should be stuck with, but he is not the right man for such a great club.
Man City will regret lack of ambition 7:13pm on 22 Nov 2009 Absolutely ridiculous blog and comments phil. A 2-2 draw at anfield is a good result for any team in world football. Man city should be pleased with the point as it is a step towards breaking the top 4. If they had gone there and attacked and lost 3-2 you would have been the first to talk about naivity, poor defensive play and how they won't break into the top 4 if they can't pick up valuable points away from home.

The result and performance says more about liverpools inability to win games and that after 5 years in the job rafa is still reliant on gerrard (and torres) to always be fit and singlehandedly win games. Rafa has built his squad and shipped out the players from before his time that he didn't want and also his own signings that he didn't want such as alonso-whom he forced out after he ridiclously decided gareth Barry was a better player... And the result of his efforts is a 2-2 home draw with man city where the "expert" comment (from a Liverpool fan like yourself phil) is that man city have missed out.... Ohh how the mighty have fallen!

I have nothing against Liverpool and actually have watched them 4 times from the kop this year, but the sooner rafa goes the better. Hiddink to Liverpool or man city (although I
like Hughes and think this would be unfair) and you would see a huge improvement.

Phil McNulty Q&A 3:25pm on 11 Nov 2009 Phil - you tipped liverpool for the titl at the start of the season and then stuck by them for a while after (controversially in some peoples eyes - based on comments on your blogs) - now they have lost 5 games and dropped points at home to Birmingham - do you still think they will or even can win the league?

Sorry to bring up this question - as i know you get it rammed down your throat on every blog... i am just interested that is all.

also - are you a Liverpool fan? - you always get criticised for pro-Liverpool bias ... but do you actually support them?

Football helping our Armed Forces heroes 11:00am on 11 Nov 2009 Good Luck to Stant - and Good luck to all our troops/servicemen/women currently serving.

I am not service/ex-service myself... i couldn't think of anything worse to be honest - but I am extremely grateful and proud of the guys that do the job and think the charity is fantastic and very worthy!

6. Originalprideoflions - Please forgive those of us who don't refer to things in such specific terms, i think most "civvies" would call it a "gun" as it looks like what most people would descrivbe as "a gun".
What we can learn from Rooney, Dan Rooney 10:45am on 11 Nov 2009 Ricardo Johnson - decent point mate - i follow it and i understand and probably agree with what you say and where you are coming from.

I have to say though that I get quite uncomfortable when faced with the whole "race debate" ... even though i don't consider myself to be in any way "racist" nor do i discriminate, knowingly, on any grounds....

The sad thing is that sometimes the only way that i feel as a white man i can even sound ligitimate in an argument based on race is to just shut up and let any people who don't classify themselves as white to do the talking... the power of the argument is theirs not mine... does this mean that in discussions about race i am a victim of racism?... i obvioulsy know it doesn't... i'm just playing devils advocate... but it is difficult for me to feel like i can comment (even in a completely neutral way) and not feel like an imposter on the argument.

ps - the ginger hair example you give, whilst difficult for you to compare to racism - and impossible to compare on a "world history scale", does effect people - i know someone who attempted suicide due to being bullied about hair colour - as far as i am aware there have been no ex-black players kill themselves because they don't have a managers job.... my point?? that just because an issue may seem trivial to you - to others it is literally life and death...
