Fare's fair? Penalty fares and you 2:00pm on 02 Jul 2008 The whole of the British rail industry needs a good kick up the *** to jolt it into the 21st century and put it on a par with the rest of Europe.

My biggest gripe, and what makes my blood boil, is that they will sell you a ticket well in advance of your travel but penalise you disproportionately if you change your mind or miss your train.

Recently my daughter bought an advance return for £16. She missed the return train (she was stuck in traffic on her way to the station). Net result: £76 for a full price single to get home. WHY? If it was going to cost the rail company £8 to carry her home on one train, why is it £84 to carry her home on the next train half an hour later?

The attitude seems to be "We know some people will miss their trains, and then we can charge whatever we like 'cos they'll have no choice".

If our society is committed to getting people out of cars and onto greener, public transport, outlawing these cynical, complex advance purchase schemes is a good starting point.
Do you want to choose the hospital you're treated at? 1:28pm on 02 Jul 2008 No.

All I want is good quality treatment, reasonably quickly, reasonably close to home.

These the are fundamental requirements of ALL hospitals, and we should be striving to acheive them in all hospitals.

Choice is a pointless concept that we don't need, and which detracts from the real issues.
One Laptop - hello Windows, goodbye Linux 09:57am on 17 May 2008 If these kids learn on an open source OS it's inevitable that within a decade they'll be modifying and improving that OS beyond our, and Microsoft's, wildest dreams.

Whereas if they learn on Windows...

Just think what a huge pool of untapped talent there is out there. And how, in the longer term, both they and we could benefit - provided they have the right (i.e. open source) tools to do so.
