Progress of sorts but England remain in flux 8:13pm on 22 Nov 2009 Either Smith is being over-ruled in selection or he is incompetent at this level. England have consistently picked backs out of position this autumn,which apart from being naive and unproductive cannot do there confidence any good nor those of players overlooked, such as Foden. Clearly Johnson's understanding of back play is limited. Selection in the backs has been hopeless. Wilkinson is past it at this level, as is Cueto, Banahan is not an international winger(I bet Shane cannot wait to play against him), Moyne is an out and out winger, Erinle and Hipkiss both outside centres through and through. Hipkiss and Banahan fit Johnsons macho obssesion,but will never make it. A beter back line would have been,given availability

Richards' reputation hits new low 3:43pm on 27 Aug 2009 There was clearly an unhealthy culture of 'win at any price' at the club, but the attempted cover up is a total disgrace. In any public company Evans and Jillings would go immediately. Once the ERU have finished their process, I would have thought the RFU would insist on this and also demote Harlequins to Division 2, as a strong and clear mesage that wrongdoing will be firmly punished. This is what the French did with Bordeaux-Begles a few years ago.
Lisbon: A Pandora's box 5:54pm on 19 Jun 2009 It is not that the people of Europe do not want a new treaty but that they do not want this treaty. One that will reduce the gross bureaucracy,corruption and cost and get back to being a free market group is what one hears in the cafes and bistros. The politicos and bureaucrats know this, but are too fearful and dishonest to face up to it. The Conservatives have a terrific opportunity here,but I doubt whether 'Boy' Cameron and the timid Tories have the cajones for the fight. That is why they are losing votes to UKIP.
JUdging from my French neighbours and Belgian wife , I doubt whether Lisbon would win any referendum in France or Belgium today either.
Greenpeace spoof 4:50pm on 18 Jun 2009 The Brits would be crazy to allow the ECB to effectively control the City. The UK is not even in the Euro.
Brussels sees the crisis as an opportunity to emasculate the City and take business away from it. The liberalleft elite who, despite Barrosso,dominate the Commission hate the Anglo-Saxon economic model see this as revenge time.
Anyway the problem was not regulatory in the banking crisis, the FSA had the powers, but the people in charge and the political culture meant they were not used.
Finally it must be more than obvious by the UKIP vote that the British people do not want more bureaucratic controls from Brussels.Or do they not count?
Ireland's long, long wait comes to an end - just 4:53pm on 24 Mar 2009 Wales showed the lack mid-field cutting edge that has been there all season. Once Henson moved to full back their chances of scoring a try diminished. Would have been better to have moved Roberts to 15 and left the mid-field untouched.
But 2 errors of judgement in the last 5mins also shows alack of composure, i.e. the kick direct into touch and then not telling Henson to take the penalty.
It is no good having the best back line in Europe if the forwards cannot give them enough ball. 6 lineouts lost on their own throw.
So all in all, second best on the day and they all need a long hard look in the mirror, including Gatland.

Great expectations weigh heavily on Wales 10:45am on 11 Nov 2008 There were 3 key things missing from this Welsh team ;
1. Composure,particularly in the last 15mins ,which is about leadership
2. An effective lineout.
3. Lack of midfield penetration,which despite his blunder, improved after Hook came on. I cannot remember a Welsh side ever losing with so much possession.
Therefore, I cannot see a win against NZ or the Aussies,even if they are lucky enough to have a fit Henson.
Central banks to the rescue 09:01am on 26 Sep 2008 It is not the system at fault, but the incompetent greedy people who have been operating it. Markets need morals, and regulators who are not asleep on the job. But if the politicos adopt such laissez-faire attitudes as the Bush and Brown governments the regulators are bound to be timorous. Then, as we have seen , the greedy and unscrupolous take advantage.
For example, it is common knowledge that insider based short selling has been going on, on massive scale , for years,but neither in the US nor UK has there been anything but tokenism in investigating it. Similairly, with irresponsible mortgage lending, but for political reasons our leaders became commercially deaf.
Nailing a sneezing maverick 1:11pm on 25 Sep 2008 As an interested observer, it seems to me Mc Cain, in his lust for the Presidency, has abandoned all his previous pricnciples and poliicies, and increasingly, his judgement.
The tragedy for America is he was not elected instead of Bush 8years ago, and that he is elected now instead of Obama.
It is partcularly sad that he has allowed his campaign team to resort to lying. America's last 2 Presidents were liars(Clinton on sex, Bush on WMD,to name but 2 examples), which has done such harm to the moral credibility of the USA and its influence. The last thing America and the world need is another one. Of course, in McCains case it may be the beginning of senility, so he forgets what his original position was!
But, it looks from a rational view Obama by default. lets hope he is as good as he sounds and cleans the stable.
