Park life 5:53pm on 24 Sep 2008 It should also be remembered that the electoral college system in the US means that candidates can and do completely ignore non-battleground states such as Mississippi during elections. Mississippi is solid Republican (60% last 2 elections) and will remain so which results in neither candidate spending time or money finding out what the voters there think or want - there's nothing in it for either candidate to bother making promises. Unfortunate if your one of the 40% who didn't vote Republican as it means you have essentially no voice at all in the election (same thing but reversed if you're a Republican in California or Massachusetts) but it's the way it is.
