The Digital Economy Bill - does it add up? 7:28pm on 20 Nov 2009 I think the most controversial element is no longer the measures against file sharers, but the powers inserted at the last minute to allow the Secretary of State to amend the law at will and to appoint anyone to police online infringement in any way. In other words, it gives Mandelson and his successors a blank cheque to do anything they like, or anything the entertainment industry persuades them is in the interests of the economy, or anything which any international copyright treaty demands, without going back to Parliament. I'm alarmed at giving this much power to politicians who've shown they don't understand how to balance the legitimate rights of content producers with the legitimate rights of society as a whole.

Gov 2.0 in action 5:51pm on 29 Sep 2009 One reason this can work in America is that everything produced by the Federal Government is automatically in the public domain, so anyone can use it for whatever they want. I wish our government would realise the economic and social advantage of freeing our data.

Turnout turnaround? 10:32am on 10 Nov 2008 The Politico article discusses the number of voters as a proportion of those registered to vote. That's how we normally measure turnout in the UK, but here all adults are obliged to register. In the U.S., a better turnout figure (although harder to measure) is the number of voters as a proportion of all adults, and I think the voter registration drives did improve that figure in this election.
Ask Bearders #181 4:28pm on 08 Nov 2008 Re Jonathan Ellis (#9): Yes, in the case of Hampshire it was a mistake not a true refusal to play. But don't we still have to maintain the principle that the umpires' decision on the field of play is final and can't be overturned by the authorities?
Ask Bearders #181 6:02pm on 05 Nov 2008 I'm glad you oppose the ICC changing the result of the England v Pakistan Test, but I'd be interested to know what you think of the match between Hampshire and Glamorgan in the 1969 County Championship. The umpires awarded the match to Glamorgan when Hampshire went home before play had been abandoned, but the MCC later declared it to be a draw.
A change in the Weather 2:24pm on 24 Sep 2008 There are some definite improvements here -- thanks. However, one thing that is less clear is the wind speed and direction. Now when I look at my 24 hour or 5 day forecast, the wind is spelled out in words in small type, rather than being immediately visible in symbols as it was before. And I can't find a wind map any more either. Maybe I'm unusual but when I'm cycling I care about the wind more than the temperature or the rain!
