I would not be at all surprised that the Romanian Child Protection authorities would have done this in the past...

...BUT...

Those involved from Whitewell really should have known better. So many naive Westerners get involved in Romania without any consultation or involvement of local people, who are the only ones who know how to deal with the corruption and to work the system in Romania. If I had to guess, I would say those involved from Whitewell came stomping in with big size 12 boots, gave the impression that they were superior to the locals, and ended up getting on completely the wrong side of the local administration.

It does raise the question though: why were members of Whitewell never told any of this, and why was the building not sold rather than being demolished?

They are entitled to live in the UK, but must not become an unreasonable burden and they must have permission if they intend to work there.

And unfortunately, the racism which many of these people would encounter in Romania is just as bad as in N.I. (Obviously this does not excuse the acts of violence perpetrated by the small-minded, uneducated, xenophobic racist morons of South Belfast).

(And yes, I am living in Romania at the moment)

As an outsider, I've had the impression that WW had been built around some kind of strange McConnell "personality cult" for years, and was just wondering when they would tear themselves apart.

Changes to international pages 11:13am on 12 Jun 2009 Steve, you may have *replied* to the points raised, but you haven't really *addressed* them. If you were having technical issues with the two different versions of the site, why did you not get your techies to sit down and figure out a new way which would work, but would still allow the choice for international users?

At the moment, I pay a company 6 pounds per month for UK VPN access to allow me to view the UK version of the news website and iPlayer content. I would be more than happy to instead pay this to the BBC *if I were given the opportunity to*. But at the moment, you give me no choice!!!

Please, please, please put things back the way they were, at least until your technical guys can figure out a better way to fix the technical issues.

For once, PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR USERS!
Changes to international pages 2:57pm on 11 Jun 2009 An appalling decision, made too hastily, without any consultation, and apparently because some techies can't be bothered to invest the time to come up with a solution which would actually work for everyone.

Add me to the list of expats who choose the UK edition, because I want to see the Northern Ireland headline on the front page in addition to all the other news.

2. No; if I'm not mistaken, the court injunction prevents any details of investments being divulged (see the report).

3. Also from the report, it appears that the FSA has been asking questions about aspects of the Society. No more details on that one.
