Ivan's death 3:36pm on 25 Feb 2009 There is a thing in politics that those on the outside never quite get. Most people in politics are there because they care about their fellow men and women and of course children and all family life. Having been invoved in local politics I have witnessed at first hand how the sorrow flows outside of all political divides when a tradegy strikes a fellow politican.
We may disagree in politics, but I always like to think that there are ' bigger things in life that unite us than divide us'
Since I heard the sad news today a special song, keeps sounding in my head, that of John Lennon and his song 'Beautifull Boy'

All of this will be interesting to watch this evening, but I am reminded of Sir Isaac Newton commenting on the South Sea Bubble saying:

“I can calculate the motions of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.”

Proving I suppose that financial, chaos is nothing new, just a re run of an old movie, with different scenery and actors, but underlying it all, somethings never really change!

Massive mortgage squeeze 1:42pm on 25 Nov 2008 Robert - whilst it is true 'that banks are having to redeem £160bn of bonds backed by mortgages over the coming three years, when it expects to receive just £150bn in deposits from ordinary savers' what is confusing people -and it has taken me time recently to get to the bottom of it, is that the £250 billion in temporary underwriting announced on 8th October allows the banks to issue unsecured loan debt with a government guarantee. So far this has had at least 2 banks, Llloyds and HBOS take advantage of this and I believe Nationwide is in there as well. Although the maturing bonds cannot be 'reissued' becuase of current market conditions as I understand it there is no reason why the banks Treasury cannot issue unsecured debt to fund the repayment of the due bonds. Maybe you with your influence can check this out.

It is about time someone had the courage to tell it the way it is- overseas investors and indeed speculators know exactly what is going on and they do not like what they see.
Funding the government is current done by around 75 percent of overseas investors -last week we saw several other gilt issues in the market and there is so much more to be funded
Investors are unlikely to do it unless long term interest rates are higher and if course the more money you raise the more the country has to earn each year to pay the interest let alone the capital

Sterling shunned 5:42pm on 24 Oct 2008 It is good to see that Mr Preston is trying to find something positive to say.

Sterling interest rates should be cut immediately over the weekend and it be a political decision that is fully justified. a half a point at least.

The reason sterling is so weak is more that it is sterling being hit not the dollar being bought - witness today's sterling dollar rate volitility and sterlings downward trend across currencies. The economy is in bad shape and the currency investors know the truth and are voting with their money

Robert has put his finger on some of the causes, but still does not seem able to admit that this government has spent excessively and placed the UK in a much weaker position than most western economies

It is clear no matter what you say you are causing controversy and damage.

Now there are runs on countries 10:36am on 24 Oct 2008 Mr Preston of course is well informed from his Labour friends, this we know. When I see an article from Mr Preston admitting that his friends have spent beyond their means our public money in the good times and did exactly the opposite of what Mr Brown was telling us about boom (built on rising housing prices) and bust, then I may change my mind about him.
In the meanwhile will Mr Preston not admit that Labour lowered unemployment by putting more jobs in the public sector. That before we even started heading into recession it was clear that the coffers were not there to adequately fund a recession because of the Labour party's spend, spend spend
Rothschild "won't back down" 7:32pm on 21 Oct 2008 Robert Preston is now not only content with being the source of leaked information from the government on what or not it is doing in finance, he now thinks he is the king of political journalism as well. Having caused panic in the financial markets he now fancys himself it would seem as a political guru and is working up to telling people who they should vote for no doubt. Does his vanity have no bounds?
I would suggest he gets on with his job and stops all the sensational stuff that he gets fed with by his Labour cronies, who have been the obvious source of so much information to him.
As for Mr Meddlesome, Mandleson, would I be surprised if this Report on what Mr Osborne did on not say was all a set up ? no! Would I be surprised if Mr Mandleson is a supplier of the spin?- But then as was said in a well known political book 'you may say that, I could not possibibly comment!
