As others will have pointed out, "Hispanic" refers to the Spanish-speaking segment of Mexico, Central and South America -- also called "Latin America," which causes me a lot of trouble as a classicist using Google.

It does surprise me a bit that you were unprepared to see multiculturalism in America -- that is what a lot of us pride our country on, even if there are some who would prefer it be more monolingual. The same people who wear those t-shirts are also usually able to pronounce "quesadilla" correctly, even if their more tolerant but less exposed counterparts are not.

I look forward to reading your viewpoints on America, and I hope you will seek out other American cultures and subcultures, since they and the way they interact with each other are what make the US interesting!
A case for healthcare reform? 4:50pm on 09 Sep 2009 What's really pathetic is how so many people are incapable of understanding the term "government option." The key word there is "option." They make ridiculous comparisons to getting to choose between UPS and Fedex, and forget that the majority of people use the cheap government option, the US postal system. Why not have a cheap government alternative in healthcare as well? It's better than no healthcare at all, and it doesn't affect people who want to pay extra for fancy insurance.

Reaching out to foreign media 3:34pm on 23 Jun 2009 Everyone saying Americans view foreign popularity as a negative is behind the times. The youth vote has chosen Obama and his politics, and said no to the old-fashioned dog-eat-dog policies of last century. They are going to be the ones calling the shots for the next several years. But the insular conservatives of the past were not completely toxic - by insisting their children be raised with traditional family values, they created a lively generation that is interested in the outside world and cares about helping those less fortunate than themselves.

Ethical Man is reborn 9:45pm on 16 Feb 2009 Take that bit above about Portland with a large dose of salt -- there are several cities throughout the US that are extremely bike-friendly and have great transportation systems -- Boulder, Colorado for example, where drivers are practically 2nd class citizens.

I'd suggest that the same problem you're having -- coming up with a way to have efficient, low-cost, green transportation in a country that's not only large but has vast swathes of undeveloped land to traverse-- is part of why America's average emissions are so much higher than Europe's.

And as a last note, which I wouldn't add but for my username, anything that close to Yonkers and that far south of New Paltz is about as upstate as Central Park -- a couple of trees do not an upstate make. So on your next trip be sure to pass through the real thing =)
Material girls 6:16pm on 16 Oct 2008 To me it sounds like the idea of limited good -- if the government collects taxes and distributes them to everyone, then some people feel that they'll wind up with less money than they had before, without any benefit. That is, if someone else is getting "good", it must mean it's being taken away from someone else. Although this is strictly speaking true when it comes to the very wealthy, those in rural areas understandably are wary of anyone taking away what little they do have.
