Sidebar: European shares set for 20 years of growth

Goldman Sachs predicts that European stock markets will continue their bull run for the next two decades.

Even though the European equity market has soared by over 150% since the trough of 2003, Goldman points out that it is only now reaching the peak that was achieved in 2000. This is despite profits rising by almost 60% since 2000 and returns on equity almost doubling.

The bank raised the prospect of sustained economic growth akin to that in the era after the second world war.

Goldman said that Europe's equity markets today were mirroring earlier periods in which the markets had moved almost invariably upwards for up to 25 years.

The New Capitalism - in video 4:38pm on 21 Dec 2008 It's all very well claiming that now taxpayers are substantial owners of the banks, etc, that those companies will be forced to listen to taxpayer needs, but I can't see the mechanism by which this control will be exerted. I doubt that one could show up to the AGM claiming to represent "a taxpayer" and get admission, let alone a vote on substantive issues.

Without a formal mechanism for exerting influence, the taxpayer will remain as powerless as before. If the government is considering fielding a "taxpayer's representative" at the AGM, or indeed on the boards of these publically-funded private corporations, how will that representative decide between the competing needs of various groups of taxpayers?

If multiple advocacy groups are to be permitted, how many will be allowed, and who decides which of them actually get a vote?

It seems that the democratisation of ownership is what is being implied, yet there is no process or mechanism to facilitate this.

Until there is, surely claims that taxpayers now "control" these companies are at best, fantasy, and at worst, deceit.

mugger: I don't care who's it is! just gimme!

banker: if I give this to you, millions of families will suffer, homes will be repossessed, loans called in, business will close, unemployment will explode and the banking system will collapse!

mugger: err..

banker: look, it's simple, I cannot be allowed to be poor, or the world ends, and that means your family, your house, your loans, your job and your bank account get toasted.

mugger: oh.

banker: this is a stickup, gimme all your money....

You say that the government should borrow as much as possible as soon as possible. But immediately before that you note that there will be long-term reductions in income.

Increased borrowing means increased interest payments, yet these would need to come from reduced income. Is it not the case that the strategy you suggest would necessarily squeeze living standards, in order to make up the shortfall between increased expenses and reduced income?

You imply that you must choose between greenliness and technology, but that is a false dichotomy. Those are not the only choices you face. You can try to sell the greenest technology you can find. This means well-built, long-lived devices with a minimal amount of useless features, minimal packaging, reusable/recyclable parts etc. It means failing to stock things that are power-hogs, or require batteries. It means finding and promoting products made by companies with solid green credentials.

Greenliness? I did say that!

Users of a popular online encyclopaedia were shocked to discover today that the Labour Party's page on the site has been censored.

The image of the party was apparently too stupid for general consumption. In fact the image of the Party "has been trampled through the mud, rubbed in tar and rolled in feathers" according to one pundit we never approached.

Some commentators say that the Party's image was always looking a little tarnished.

Thanks. After consideration, I must say that from my philosophical standpoint, all yolks are burdensome, by definition. They may also be messy, but they are always a burden.

I can't even concede that some yolks might be necessary, in order to maintain a stable society - because our environment is constantly evolving, stability is ultimately an illusion. In this sense, stability is undesirable and thus yolks that maintain it will ultimately be toxic.

So, I answer no to your question.
