Why don't the Conservatives spell out their plans? 00:28am on 09 Sep 2009 Politicians just don't get it as far as the public mood is concerned and by this example, Mr Cameron still doesn't get it.
Now were he to recognise how unfairly biased some of our taxes were ... and set out politically appealing targets by which he could correct the balance, then I think he might gain credibility.
As Nick suggested, the promised savings in parliamentary costs are but minuscule in the light of our national indebtedness and cutting minister's pay by 5% will hardly be seen as radical; on the other hand, if this is leading towards cutting the pay of Joe Public by a similar percentage that, in many cases, would be catastrophic.
Those who gained most from the financial debacle we are going through are not only still wealthy, but in most cases are still employed. And that sticks in the craw of the poor, who suffer most at times like this.
And what hurts even more is that it is a Labour government who are largely responsible for situation and who seem unwilling to put forward ideas of how to cope with it. Why? Because the upcoming election has tied their hands.
Charging for online news 11:34pm on 06 Aug 2009 Frankly, I just love the idea of Rupert Murdoch feeling the pinch just as I would pay to read his bankruptcy notice but to be realistic, someone has to pay the journalists who glean the news and with newspaper sales falling rapidly (Observer group also recently surrounded by rumour) income has to be raised somewhere.

One thing is sure; it will have to be via a fixed monthly/annual sub and that in itself will create competition. Should be fun.
Where has the summer gone? 02:05am on 18 Jul 2009 The question is ... would the BBC be able to tell us with any certainty when summer does eventually reappear.

All too often I can sit watching the 24 hr forecast on Ceefax digital while the weather news being broadcast on channel 1 gives an entirely different forecast for the same locality.

A short while ago the BBC made a huge fuss of having spent two million pounds on a new, improved forecasting system. I don't know where it went to or even if it ever got off the ground, but I can't say the forecasts have been any more accurate since. And I certainly see little point in allowing two conflicting reports to be issued.

Interestingly, the ballyhoo which accompanied the new service died out within a day or so.

I'd like to know who signed the contract, what they expected to get from it and whether there was a get out clause.

Rory Cellan-Jones was discussing the designer and his design ... and in the latter respect the Mac stands supreme in the regular market place. And as for the box, every quality oriented designer knows the presentation is a critical part of the package as a whole.

It begs the question whether some of the writers here would equally expect to buy, for example, a Dunhill watch in a cardboard box.

It is down to getting the job right (if readers will excuse the pun) and that means creating a sympathetic relationship in all aspects of product design, packaging and marketing.

Apple largely has this right and as a result have achieved an enviable reputation to prove it.

The vast majority of opinions are cogently argued and in the way the British love to approach such things, there is absolutely no consensus.

The BBC just can't win, however thoroughly they tackle a subject.

But I did take exception to the showing of the busloads of tourists so soon in attendance. This was tacky, for it reduced the viewer to the level of the morons in the coaches.
The return of politics' 'N' word 11:58am on 17 Jun 2009 If there were ever grounds for having a pan European defence strategy, nuclear armament is it.

What is the point of Britain and France having complementary systems when as part of Europe we are each meant to defend the continent as a whole. Is it national pride, fear of the Germans, what?

In an unstable world there is a need for a deterrent but in such a group of trusting partners as Europe should be, that deterrent does not need to be duplicated.

Both France and Britain have major financial problems; surely it is time for us to get together and thrash this one out.

And by normal, I mean normal; extraordinary moderation decisions,
extraordinary moderation delays and despite a plethora of excellent suggestions, very little sign that any of them will be taken up.

Yes, you are right, our votes are no more secret than the IP number on your computer which can be logged and used (or abused) by any interested government department and certain other less official organisations.

#130 and 131. The problem is less one of being watched and more one of covert censorship. They have a little list, you know, so it's no good blaming the moderators if a post is ignored or rejected.

The secret is, write your post like an illiterate street fighter, pepper it with crudity then sit back and wait for it to appear.

It generally will because large sections of the media use such comments to lend an artificial air of fairness to their columns; something to point to when justifying their failure to print more intelligent observations.

There is a problem with the way that posts breaking house rules are reported back.

The BBC, much to its credit, advises offenders they have broken the rules and then returns a copy of the 'offensive' comments.

To their discredit, they refuse to say what the offence was, not even by highlighting the returned copy. The result is that the accompanying invitation to resubmit becomes a nonsense ... resubmit 'what' has to be asked?

Moderation is subjective and the moderators are no less prone to fault than the writers ... but I suppose that's subjective too.
