Benefit cuts consensus? 5:21pm on 05 Oct 2009 By the time the Conservatives have identified disabled people to target...and public servants to target...and public servant pensions to target..( shall I go on ) the small number of non targeted people left won't be enough to get them elected. Brown and Co will be back!!

And before anyone says the genuinely disabled have nothing to fear....does anyone on here actually believe that to be true?

Acropolis now? 10:40pm on 20 Jun 2009 Clearly there are strong arguments on both sides but maybe, considering the uniqueness of these artefacts, the Greeks and the BM could agree a form of 'Joint Stewardship" of the marbles and agree to discuss 'legal ownership' at a future as yet unspecified date. As part of the stewardship arrangement, exact replicas could be made, and each country could agree to house half the originals for a period of time, then exchange halves, and so on.

Visitors in both countries would have the exact same opportunity to experience the sculptures.....and in the two places in the world that they are most strongly associated with. Ultimately in time, this would be seen as a non controversial arrangement that satisfies most people.
Britain's media obsession 11:34am on 16 Jun 2009 Of course this government will have an interest in media.....to control the media is a major step towards controlling the population...and we know how this government likes to control...

Imagine a situation in a few years when almost every transaction or communication has to be via the internet....we already know the government is making moves towards a state whereby it will have access to all those communications.

As to the TV Tax ( lets call it by its correct name ).....lets abolish it. If the BBC offers a service people want, they will pay for it. If the BBC offers a service the government wants, let it pay for it.

Chancellor in distress 3:34pm on 02 Jun 2009 There is no more reason for him to go than many others...I think less to be honest. GB is the architect of much of what is wrong economically with this country and this government.

All the current MPs are basically corrupt in my opinion...or have been corrupted...even those with no expenses issues to defend ( if any exist ).

They are corrupt because they were aware that the expenses system existed ( and unless totally naive ) would have known how it was being exploited...but sat on their hands. I would argue that by doing this they didn't act in the public interest.

The more authority a MP wielded in Parliament...the greater the responsibility to act in my opinion. My view is that all of them expected to benefit in some way...and all of them expected 'the system' to remain a secret....so why rock the boat.

Now we have people who have been found guilty of milking the system and are deemed not fit to be MPs ( presumably...or else why stand down at the next election ) hanging onto their posts as long as possible...in order to qualify for the huge termination payments / pensions that they will receive.

It seems the Speaker didn't have to hang on for anything as he is entitled to his retirement goodies immediately!!
An equality of shame? 09:57am on 22 May 2009 These people are all members of an institution where taking advantage of the tax payer had become a way of life...anyone who didn't take active steps to end this practice is, in my opinion, guilty of dereliction of duty to the country and to Parliament.

Within that general dereliction of duty...MPs milked the system to varying degrees....some more than others obviously...but probably most did to some degree.

I may be old fashioned...but I believe someone is honest...or not! To milk the system to any degree puts someone in the 'not honest' category.
Back-slapping 2:57pm on 20 May 2009 Brown believes an election will cause chaos as it will usher in a Conservative government.

It is a pity that he won't let the electorate decide which party is the more chaotic...I can see why he knows that his party and his leadership is likely to most fit the bill in that respect so far as the voters are concerned.

He probably doesn't want voters to have the right to make a judgement on their MPs conduct either...his party will be decimated ( as will the others I suspect ).
A question of when, not if 00:39am on 19 May 2009 I felt sorry for the guy..he is out of his depth.

This notion that the Speaker has to go is rubbish in my opinion...they all need to go.

They have already tried the argument that 'the system' is the problem. Now they are saying the Speaker is the problem as he didn't correct the system.

In other words, they are saying we fiddled and cheated because the system let us. If the Speaker had changed the system we wouldn't have been able to fiddle and cheat...so lets blame the Speaker for our fiddling and cheating.

They all need to go asap......everything else is an irrelevance now.
First cheques, now jobs 2:26pm on 14 May 2009 I shall be writing to my MP asking him how he can justify a second homes allowance when he lives near me and as it happens....works near me.

I of course (like many of his constituents) have to pay huge commuting costs out of our taxed incomes...

To be fair on him I suppose...I notice that several Essex MPs who live much much nearer to Westminster than he does also claim for a second home.

Hopefully their constituents will be writing to ask the same question.
