Merkel: an unlikely success 08:25am on 30 Oct 2008 I would question whether Germany really is "Europe's.. most powerful country." I would argue that in fact the United Kingdom is Europe's most powerful country, given out position on the world stage, our international links and powerfull financial sector. However, if you mean in terms of geographical size and size of the economy, then I concede Germany is more powerfull, but politically, Britain is easily Europe's most powerful country.

I agree that Labour are in one difficult mess. However I don't think Gordon will go yet. I personally believe he will lead Labour into the next general election and then loose that election with Labour. I certainly think this leadership talk and resignations is difficult for Gordon, and he needs to turn round and do a John Major, "Put up or shut up" because this constant internal power struggle and leadership questioning will only push the Labour Party further to defeat. As for Nick Clegg, well his speech was certainly interesting. He moved to the right slightly but in a more one nation way as opposed to a new right move, promising tax cuts for those on lower incomes. Very interesting that he appears now dependent on Vince Cable, which is slightly worrying when it is Nick that is suppose to be the leader, as opposed to leading through Vince Cable. Very interesting times we live in politically!
