Taxpayers' mortgage guarantee 8:01pm on 03 Dec 2008 I have been saving up my money so I can afford to buy a house at some point. I did decided not to get a huge mortgage just to 'get on the ladder' in the next few years. So I welcome falling house prices from the insane levels they reached in recent years.

But now Gordon Brown seems to want to keep house prices artificially high. On top of that to add insult to injury he wants me, someone who did not take on risky debt, to pay for the lifestyles of those who overextended themselves.

Well I am not taking it lying down. I am young at 26 and will potentially be paying taxes for many years to come. But I am utterly sick of the way this government is punishing savers, tax-payers and those who refused to participate in the debt binge. When working out how much his "package" will cost I hope Gordon Brown took into consideration the fact that I will be looking to emigrate from away from this country and its punitive regime against prudent savers as soon as I have opportunity. I don't think I'll be the only one. I wonder who Brown will get to fund his give-aways then when savers like myself decide not to be taken for a ride in this country any longer.

"It's clear from comments posted on my blog that there's a widespread misunderstanding about what the massive taxpayer bailout of our banks was designed to achieve or could achieve... the transfer to our banks of so much of our cash wasn't designed to kickstart lending by our banks."

Mervyn King before a select committee shown on Newsnight on the 26th of November:

"This was not done merely to protect the banks. This was done in order that the flow of lending to the real economy could continue at normal rates and one way or another that has to be seen to happen."

So where exactly is the misunderstanding Robert?

Why interest rates aren't falling 1:54pm on 02 Nov 2008 No Robert, low interest rates have been the problem. The solution is for those who have borrowed too much to pay off their debts and tighten their belts. That is the only way out of this. Encouraging more lending at this point will make the problem worse.

The day the bill arrived 11:59pm on 29 Sep 2008 Robert a key question: does the government have the funds and the ability to nationalise the whole banking system if needs be? How close are we to seeing a run on all banks, and then a run on food, and then general anarchy?

Should the government perhaps consider stepping in and taking over the whole lot before it is too late?
The day the bill arrived 9:19pm on 29 Sep 2008 Needs the be renamed: "the day the bill didn't arrive"!

"He'll be gone in three weeks" 2:04pm on 18 Sep 2008 Hey Andrew, glad you stated a blog! What a storm we are living through! I am really starting to believe Brown can and will be ousted. Such a shame that it seems the Tories are getting support by default of such an unpopular government, rather than on the strength of their ideas.
