Gilts and guilt 08:45am on 26 Mar 2009 The investors are starting to see the reality of the UK fiscal position. If we do not watch out we will be in the same position as Iceland,alone with a worthless pound. Buying pounds now is a much greater risk than the USD or EURO. We have no backup except the IMF.
The questions for the former bank bosses 2:29pm on 10 Feb 2009 I thought that the questions these politicians asked were stupid. None of them have any banking background or have passed banking exams. Yet we expect them to come with answers,not likely. A case of the blind leading the blind.
Bonus buck stops with Brown 12:27pm on 06 Feb 2009 If they want to pay these bankers ,pay them in shares. At the value of those shares in 2007-8. That should help them see the problems of the shareholders that they ripped off.
Uncharted territory 1:24pm on 30 Jan 2009 We need to help the banking system first. My solution.1 Abolish the mark to market rule for banks. 2 Mark down the bad debts over 25-30 years.The bank should pay off 3-4% of the debt each year,plus the interest.3 The government should give help to do this if needed and audit it. 4 To recapitalise the system the banks should increase Tier 1 at the rate of one half percent per year. This all should be helped by the government/bank of england. Over a period of 25-30 years most of the property debts should be profitable. This will relieve the pressure on banks to hoard cash and cost much less than current plans.
Bank of England forces bank shrinkage 08:31am on 18 Oct 2008 The bank of england is one of the reasons we are in this crisis. Raising intrest rates was the most stupid thing to do. They were thinking of old inflation,comparable to the head chef of the titanic worrying about the next days menu while the water rises. It stems from having too many academics and not enough business advisors.Most only look at history and have no imagination. The next big world problem stemming from rising intrest rates will be Deflation,a much more dangerous situation.It is already starting with house prices and equity also commodities.
Day of reckoning 08:50am on 10 Oct 2008 The dominoes are falling today.Still the central bankers have not acted correctly by lowering intrest rates, and changing accounting rules for mortgages.Until this is done the banking problem will be at the core of the crisis and will eat at confidence. For the pound par with the dollar is coming same for euro.All in all a good buying event for the very brave.
The deleveraging vortex 09:22am on 09 Oct 2008 Due to the misguided central banks raising intrest rates, the dominoes are falling. Very hard to stop once started. It looks as if we will go into a period of very low interest rates and probable deflation. This will last a long time. Not just 1 year probably 3-4,but as always we will come out of it and learn nothing.
Full deposit protection is nigh 12:41pm on 08 Oct 2008 The announced cut in intrest rates are a good if very late start. Rates should rapidly fall to help morgages. The rate rises were criminal stupidity as the result was the present problems. A case of driving the car with your eyes closed, namely only looking at inflation to the indifference to all other factors in the economy. Just by decreasing intrest rates to 1% may help the economy but it may not help confidence. Which has been profoundly shaken.
Why bank shares are falling 12:01pm on 08 Oct 2008 This package by the government is the fiscal equivalent of rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic. What is needed is a period of 1-2% intrest rates,and a change in accounting rules to let banks write down non performing loans over the period of the loans. At present we are all taking the short term view and present accounting rules encourage this. If this government bailout does not work ,very likely in my opinion, it leves the uk and the pound in a very very dnngerous position. Who will lend us money?. Not the euro zone it has its own problems, IMF maybe but in dollars and with a falling pound not good for us.
