Can European managers succeed in South America? 8:49pm on 26 Oct 2009 Well let me clear something up. I would love Diego to leave the side but it just wont happen. The problem with a foreign coach is that he or she may lack the passion that will push the players. If you have a star on your jersey as a national side then you know about winning. There are plenty of great coaches in England,Germany,Italia,Brasil,Argentina and I could go on. I just do not see why you would have to look elsewhere for a coach. There are 2 things that the AFA does with the national team, that is A- never really fire a coach,they let it ride until the end and B, ever hire a foreign coach. I would fear that coach would not understand Argentine football.

As for Messi being a bit "Too European", let me explain something. If Messi had played even a single season in Argentina apertura or clausura he would be much more liked here in Argentina. He has spent almost half his life in Catalonia, but he does come back for the summer. But the problem with this theory is that none of the big clubs took the risk on him and the cost of his medical bills, Barcelona were. Many people are scolding Lio for his play for Argentina, and it is not just because of Maradona. He did not do so great under Basile either. He did better but nothing out of this world. Lio needs that Xavi behind him like Riquelme was and maybe Payasco Aimar will be that player. You can not be a ghost for an entire match if you dubbed "World's Best" and a strong population does not even watch European football in Argentina and could care less what he does for Barcelona. I still have faith in him and I think he will break out soon.

Also to add, Argentina nor Brasil will never take in a coach from Europe. It does not work that way for the Argentinos nor the Brasilians. I have always felt that going outside of your country to get a coach seems a bit desperate(Not poking fun at England, but look at it). If you are a great footballing nation it starts from the coaching and etc. Putting European tactics in Argentine and Brasilian football? I do not know. The other countries in South America have but I just do not like it. I would not even like a Brasilian coach or a Colombian or a coach from Uruguay coach Argentina. And I feel the Brasilian will feel the same way. If you are a great nation in football, you should have a great coach from that country as well.

Man what a relief that this WCQ is done for us(Argentina). I am thrilled we got it and did not think we would go to Uruguay and get a win. I was hoping for a draw but a win. And people doubted Marcelo Bielsa's Chile! Shame on them! He is a man that will NEVER taken a dive. The 2002 game vs Uruguay was not a fixed game for those Colombians who want to believe it was, but it was not.

As bad as I feel for the Ecuadorian I am happy we are in. Ecuadorian could of LOCKED in a WC spot sometime agao.

Just look at this,

round 1 lost to Ven 1-0 in Quito
Round 2- Lost to Brasil
Round 3- Lost to Paraguay
Round4- Beat Peru
Round 5- Tied Argentina. Which Palacio scored very late, to snatch away a historic win for Ecuador.

They had many chances, and blew it. Started very slow. See Argentina stared very good, without that great start they would of likely missed out.

Colombia is a tragic story. They have a HISTORY of self destruction. They keep finding ways to hurt themselves. I wish them well but I just can not see them doing well in the future. It makes me sad but nothing I can do. I do not know ANYTHING about their youth(Which I follow the youth teams with a passion). It is strange, as soon as their government started to change for the good, their football turned to the worse.

Maybe 2014 they may qualify. And Tim may answer this question. Since Brasil automatically qualifies for 2014, does the same routine go? Top 4 get automatic births and the 5th place team gets a playoff? If anybody knows this answer, please shed some light on it.
Maradona singing in the rain 09:58am on 12 Oct 2009 U13844141- Not at all, some did not like it when he turned down to play for the U-20's because he wanted to have a vacation. Some say he played the France card, that he would of joined France if Argentina did not call him, again not true. Both his parents are Argentine and he left France when he was a baby. His brother Federico is another player in Argentina. So nobody really cares that he was born in France. The River supporters really adore him, the women love him and he is a very humble guy. Scoring in his old stadium I am sure brought back a lot of memories. His launching point was vs Boca when he scored 2 goals vs them. Pasarella said he was going to be a star in the future and he sure is. Personally I was very nervous waiting for his call up, Diego and Higuain ran into each other at the airport a few months back. I think Real were coming back from a US trip. Maradona told him, "You scored a couple goals" Higuain quietly nodded and said yes. If I am not mistaken, this was Argentina going to a friendly or something. Can not fully recall where the national team was going.

Chile will play well at home and I can not see Ecuador doing much vs their attack. Ecuador dug themselves into a hole at Quito and now they will pay for it. They could of at least been a lock for a play-off now they have to hope for a win and a win for Uruguay. Poster 1, I would not go as far as saying URUGUAY have a AMAZING record at home in these qualifiers. Drew vs Chile,Venz,Ecuador, they beat Bolivia,Peru,Paraguay, and got crushed by Brasil. If you think the pressure is on for Argentina, Uruguay has just as much pressure. Playing at home, a win will send them straight to the WC. If Argentina shot themselves in the foot they left 6 a total of 6 points at home vs teams they should of beat. Now will Argentina go and play for a tie, I hope they do not go and defend the entire game. That will be disasters. Suarez and Forlan vs Heinze and co.... Argentina will play a 4-4-2, Messi and Higuain will be the duo up front. Quite similar to Forlan and Suarez. Whoever scores first then that will be the winner. Higuain is something Argentina really needed and his size and skill will put pressure on defenders. Aimar will need to create, maybe leave off Enzo Perez and add another DMF. We will all be watching this game with a lot of nerves.
Uruguay face tactical dilemma 09:39am on 05 Oct 2009 Well Mr.Vickery the final countdown for Argentina and South America will be known in a little over 10 days. As a Argentine I am rooting for Ecuador to beat Uruguay and Chile to beat Ecuador. If Argentina win and so does Ecuador, Uruguay are out of the WCQ stages. Then the match up between Chile vs Ecuador is going to be massive. Chile has not looked all that great in their last few games. But if Chile get a point in Colombia they are in. But the game in Colombia will be no easy task. Fast forward to Round 18, when Chile and Ecuador lockup. If Chile already qualified will they take it easy and let Ecuador win. I hope not, and I do not think they will for a couple reasons. 1, they need a win at home just to get the moral back up and bring the country some faith to the team again. And second, Marcelo Bielsa, the name sound familiar? Tim has written a lot about him in the past. The Argentine coach for the 02 WC who failed. I just can see him doing that to his old country. So I believe he will do his best to get his team to win. So if Argentina wins at home vs Peru and gets a draw in Uruguay that could be enough to land them in the 4th spot, if Ecuador lose their last game. The teams below Uruguay are Venz, which I do not think they will win both games vs Paraguay and Brasil(Away in Brasil). Colombia still have to play Chile at home and travel to Paraguay. Tough games. So if Argentina play their cards right and get a win right away vs Peru I think they will be fine. But that is easier said then done.
Premier danger for South America 5:27pm on 21 Sep 2009 A bitter taste in my mouth when the U-20 team failed to qualify for the WC. Some players were not allowed to leave their club sides from Europe to make the trip to join the squad. I like Sergio Batista as the coach though, won the 2007 tourney and also won another gold medal in the Olympics. Inusa had a horrible tourney in the U-20 South American Championship I single him out because he was the captain of the side. But I am not that worried about the youth of Argentina. I watched them play in another tourney in Toulon which they lost in a PK in the semis and finished 3rd in group. A lot of talented players to keep your eye on, Gustavo Bou, Erik Lamela(No I am not a River supporter),Pacheco from ATL Madird youth side which he is out on loan to a second division team and a few others who are more notable such as Buonanotte, Franco Di Santo. With all this said, I am really excited about Ever Banega. Has anybody been watching Valencia games this season. He controls that entire midfield. He is becoming a hot product, and if he keeps this up there actually may be a heir to the great Fernando Redondo after all for Argentina. I just wish Diego would like at this kid and use him along side Mascherano for the national side.
Dunga shows way to Maradona 10:29am on 14 Sep 2009 Being from Argentina I just scratch my head and slam my table every time we gave up a goal and lost. Now I am getting tired of scratching my head and my hand has started to hurt from slamming the table because of the WCQ. We started 3/3 in our games in the WCQ. A perfect 100% margin. Then going to Colombia for a goo part of the game Argentina were doing well and went up with a beautiful 1-2 between Riquelme and Messi from a quick fk. Then Tevez gets red carded and Argentina end up losing 2-1. More bad signs started to show, when it took a LAST second goal from Rodrigo Palacio to save us from a 1-0 loss to Ecuador. If Argentina had dropped that game, right now that would of left us in the 6th spot right now because of GD with Uruguay. The game vs Brasil in Mineirão, Argentina could of won that game. They were by far the better squad but the game ended 0-0. Around this time the country wanted Dunga's head of a silver platter. Back to back draws vs Paraguay and Peru(which the Peru game they scored a last second goal). After beating Uruguay and getting another loss vs Chile it was time for Basile to go. Yes Mr.Vickery you are very much correct this team was not doing that great before Maradona came and took over. But lets face it, the team has been just horrible in the WCQ since then. Game after game, the team has looked smaller and smaller. No heart, nothing. Since the the last 2 rounds have ended, I have all but said qualifying for the WC seems a bit slim. Maradona right now is traveling to parts of Europe to exclude some players. Milito,Lisandro,Heinze,Gago,Maxi,Zanetti will all be excluded from the team. I understand Gago,Maxi and Heinze they have been horrible but Lisandro,Milito and Zanetti? I do not know. With those players gone, should we expect Higuain,Zarate,Insua(Emilio, and even Federico,Samuel,Garay,Cambiasso,Fazio,Gonzalo,Ustari,Aimar,Saviola,Crespo? Are those the players that are going to come in and save Argentina. Do not hold you breath. Maradona will not call those players. He has already stated he will use more home based players. Get ready to see more of Martin I missed 3 PK's in a single game Palermo and other players that should not even belong at the stadium let lone on the pitch for the game. Next few weeks we will learn a lot if Argentina are going to the WC or they will be sitting home and watching it.
Maradona turns to fans for helping hand 8:56pm on 31 Aug 2009 I will be watching this game with eyes wide open. I recall the last that Brasil came down to Argentina and Argentina put on a clinic with a 3-1 win. The game easily could of finished 4 or 5-1. Couple weeks later in the 2005 Conf Cup Final they murder us 4-1. I believe the next time they played was in a friendly in London and that ended 3-0. Then they got us again in Copa America final 3-0 as well. The last two times the teams have played the Argentina squad has been much better. WCQ in Brasil which ended 0-0(which normally has Brasil winning with a goal margin 2+) and which Argentina was the much better side. The semis in the olympics with both sides having strong players ended 3-0 for Argentina. I do think Argentina will win this game. They have too much to lose.

Messi will miss the opening game for La Liga. He has been stellar in the preseason and last couple games.

Kun Aguero- seems to have found his form once again. Has been quite solid with ATL Madrid.

Licha Lopez aka as Lisandro. From the last few weeks or so I have to say he has been the striker in all of Europe. He has been on fire. Maradona might of found his #9.

I want to see those 3 up front and maybe Messi playing a bit back to Licha and Kun. We need 4 in the back, 3 in the middle. Let Mascherano and Maxi do their thing. Veron will not start in this game so who knows who will play along side them. Wish we had Cambiasso for this game as well.
