"serious reporters" ... um... do we have those here in the States?

I thought we had a Capitalist Press -- the best news the public can buy -- competing for ratings, telling us fluff, competing for sound-bite slots with cooked data and sensationalist crap.

And the world thinks us Americans are clueless about world events...
No kidding. If all YOU had was Fox and CNN, you'd be pretty clueless, too.

Thank God for the Inter-Tubes.

PS: I thought Michelle's dress was lovely. But, I thought Barack's bracelet was a much more interesting fashion statement.

But let me note:
I've followed Obama since he won the Senate, was excited to hear he might explore a presidential race... and bummed out when his popularity carried him to the fore of the Democratic surf. I guess his Hawaiian youth helped him catch the wave and ride it all the way.

But, i've been worried. He's a great candidate, but Americans (young and old) worry about youthful inexperience.

I know, I made the same mistake with Regan. I figured - gosh, just because a candidate is older doesn't mean he's inept, right?
And just 'cause I'm young doesn't mean I need to vote against him, right?

Regan's 'trickle down' economy was a significant contribution to the global financial nightmare we're in.

OOPS.

Please, don't make the same mistake I made.

Research the platforms, research the facts, consider ALL of the possible options, outcomes and opportunities.

Personally, I'm not just SICK of Ray-gun-omics, I srsly can't afford another term like this. I have kids to feed.

And, I hope that us Americans are catching wind to that effect.

You may not realize, but our news media are kind of lame.

I still feel like I haven't seen they critical stats about this election. I've seen support counts among polled persons... but I wonder about
a) undecided Americans
b) Americans who still don't give a hoot

Of those groups who actually follow the presidential race, I am not surprised it's tied.

But, once we get the attention of folks who have given up on the vote and we show them the candidates and their platforms, then the 'swing vote' could start to rock.

PS: I had read your tag and thought of "Gomer Pyle"... but if you're referring to those "Americans," then perhaps you're overseas?

Amen, brother.

Our neighborhood press interviews about ten folks each week. This past week there was a full page of insightful concerns about the proposed bail-out -- both for and against. Folks were making points I hadn't considered and remarking on possible consequences I hadn't even heard on NPR.

I might add that I've only ever seen one white face printed among our paper's interviews.

May folks come back again and again to finish the sight-seeing they couldn't get to this past weekend.

You know, they said the same thing about the Democratic Debate in Philly --

Philly has long had a reputation as a poor crime-filled city.
I happen to love the place and think it's a beautiful town filled with rich history, wonderful art, and creative people... and much more grass and trees than you usually find in American Urbania.

The debate's outcome was fairly tied, but Philadelphia had received a national news spotlight to positive ends.

-- kinda' funny for the 'Birthplace of Democracy' to fall into hard times, eh?

I've been wanting to see Mardi Gras for decades-- and I'm thinking it's about time we ventured south with the kids. Road Trip!

Jon – have you been listening to "Hold Steady, Stay Positive"? Great song, but I hope you’re not getting sick of your interviews yet. You’re posts are far too much fun.

On the matter of Elvis:

I had thought all Elvis Impersonators were dead... until I took the kids to a weekly free concert in the park only to be surrounded by dancing gray haired ladies being swooned by an older gentleman in a black wig and sequined bell-bottoms.

We stayed at the show with our sons. It was a valuable learning experience.

On the matter of the American Dream:

We have awoken and smelled the Starbucks... or the Dunkin' Doughnuts... depending upon your political position.

He'll participate in local gov, support senators or representatives, but the Presidents have always felt like puppets of their parties, of the rich white upper class, of The Oppressive Man...

But, from what I can tell - folks are waking up. Minorities and disenchanted 20's-30's folks are registering to vote, wearing pins...

It's been very fun to watch.

Of course, I've still heard about more fist fights over Football and Hockey than Presidential Politics... but give it a few weeks. Things could still heat up.

This is exactly how we need to re-focus our social justice agenda. While the there is still a dichotomy between "Black" and "White," concepts of Race, Ethnicity and Color have all changed in the past generation or so.

For example, I needed to fill out as US Gov form for a guy once and the options were "Hispanic, African-American, Polynesian, Asian, White... " (?!?) and the guy was a Spanish speaking Korean-American who had been raised in Mexico. (He was the son of inter-racial missionaries to Mexico.) Those silly terms on the US Gov form don't mean anything any more.
-- Screw skin color, we need to know current citizenship(s) and languages spoken.

But nowadays, the dichotomy between POOR and RICH has significantly INCREASED in the past generation.

Our current problem is much more chronic than Wall Street. It's systemic. This guy's got it RIGHT.

The 1st 5 Old Testament books, called the Torah in Jewish traditions, is NOT identical to the Koran. The Koran is a retelling of the Torah, verbally dictated by the Prophet M (circa 600 CE) and transcribed by his followers after his death.

It is very similar, but the laws are rather different and some of the characters are rather different.

So... your close, but No Cigar for You.
