A history day? 10:08am on 06 Nov 2008 Congratulations Obama, congratulations citizens of the USA!

And thanks Gavin for your reporting. You are quite right of course that the reality of the current situation will give the next president a very difficult task and a lot of very unpopular decisions will need to be taken. However, the US people used the full power of democracy to establish change for themselves, so I believe they are already preparing for the hardships that must come. Good luck to all of us, but I am optimistic - even if Obama isn't an atheist....

Has Gordon Brown endorsed Obama? 07:04am on 10 Sep 2008 I detect a great deal of bitter, defensive behaviour by posters on this blog, it seems to be me a reflection of the pressure that the populations of our two countries are feeling.

The truth is that we are all suffering the effects of a major economic downturn, and I think most people suspect that it will be other countries who will profit - countries who don't really deserve to do so, but are merely fortunate in their natural resources.

We don't wish to be held to ransom by the likes of Putin and Chavez, but we are going to have to accept the situation and face up to a significant revaluation of our economies and standards of living. In our favour we should remember that we both share an entrepreneurial culture; we are strong on team work and technology, and these things can take us into the next cycle of growth.
