Gilts and innocence 09:27am on 27 Mar 2009 Things must be really tough for El Gordo and Ali D, and they seem to be short of the odd bob or two.

Sorry if my my following comment appears to be off-topic, but I am trying to reclaim just under £2,000 overpayment made under self-sassessment for income tax in 07/08. I have submitted a request to have the money sent electronically to my Bank several times now, and still no refund, the money just keeps showing on my on-line account as awaiting my instructions.

When speaking to a humanoid (very pleasant sounding and cheerful though)at HMRC this morning, I got the distinct impression that the above was not a surprise.

Have any fellow bloggers had a similar experience, and is this a tactic to preserve HMRC cash flow ... or just my bad luck?

As far as I am aware, these indeces track average price of all property sold that month, be they low-cost flats built on a land-fill site or mansions in Belgravia. Soooooo, if there is a shortage of people buying at the lower price level, this skews the average up, alternatively a shortgae of higher price sales skews things the other way.

The clever way would be to only track sales of properties sold previously and for which there is acurate data, and calculate an average annual increase in sale price over the intervening period, and then weight that in the light of average sale prices for a basket of sales during the month under review.

Not that it really matters, as on the way down, the current method gives doom mongers their day in the sun, and on the way up it gives the Walter Mitty brigade a chance to talk up the market.

Let's not let reality get in the way of a headline.

Just catching up on the posts over the last few days. My my, what a lot of insecurity is being shown by some fellow posters about our chum, dear old Alexander Curzon.

F'r instance, # 99. FergusonHomeSecurity and others seem to have spent hours ferreting away on trying to prove some spurious point they have dreamed up on day release from the funny farm. Either they have pretty empty and meaningless lives, which is a problem for them, or they are eff-wits, which is unfortunately a problem for the rest of us as long as they rant on within this blog. Just imagine, they probably even have the vote as well!!

Go away and lie down dears.

Your comments on savers is interesting in as much as I'm afraid your envy is showing. Not very bright, I suspect, perhaps if you removed your head from your fundament you would let some air and light into your head.

Ponder on this, some NET savers have been borrowers over many years in the past, indeed were possibly around, like me, when interest rates hit 15%. But they, and we, coped and kept on plodding on for modest wages, paid our dues, put kids through college, and avoided over-borrowing for credit card debt and re-mortgaging to pay off holidays etc. Now we have retired, paid off the mortgage, and yes have some savings, but it was ALL earned, at times it was VERY hard, but we managed it. And happy and relieved to do so.

I did have sympathy for the people in debt who had not been profligate, so I shall now lie down and try not to lump all of them in with my disdain for you.
Momentous Monday 10:19am on 13 Oct 2008 There'll be tears before bedtime my dears, just you wait and see. Promises from the banks that they'll good boys and girls, just as soon as they get their sweetie money. You know it makes sense Rodney, mmmmm... lovely jubbly.

So lending will be maintained at 2007 levels. Why and how, for Gods sake. Mortgage lending went into overdrive on the back of over-priced shacks being bought by lemming-like idiots without sufficient income to service the loan. Homes ceased to be homes but were regarded as a short-term investment. Oh, and the "Bank of Buy to Let" was offering even better terms that the Icelandic Bank of Cod. The more that was lent, the more that was wanted. Then someone noticed the lack of any clothes, not only on the emperor but on his whole damn entourage as well, and the mirage of wealth and prosperity vanished back into the haze. If lending multiples are to be kept at sensible levels, with adequate LTV ratio's then HOW can mortgage lending be maintained at 2007 levels, with a finite stock of property? More panic and mayhem will ensue.

I do not want my tax money used to try perpetuate, or recreate, this insanity. Oh, and by-the way, will the last Banker leaving the scene (assuming that any of them do leave), apart from turning off all the lights, please take Gordy Boy and the eye-brow monster with them.

Oh dear, at least it will soon be time for a libation, maybe things will look better then.
How close to capitulation? 4:34pm on 06 Oct 2008 I've been listening to BBC parliament proggy...Well, now we know, AD will listen to views, is very aware of the concerns of individual savers and borrowers, oh and businesses as well, he will consider all the options, and do whatever is necessary, and will come back to the house to tell us what he is going to do just as soon as he considers it necessary. More blah blah, here's the fiddle Gordy boy, can anyone smell smoke.

What IS going on please chaps, my brain hurts, is the world ending, or is it all an illusion. Does it really matter any more. Too early in the day for a livener I'm sorry to say, but maybe another line or so from Gilmour and Waters, perhaps this is the solution...

Monday morning feeling 09:08am on 06 Oct 2008 Oh dear oh dear oh dear. I was just idly thinking that we seem to lack ANY form of leadership, in the guise of a senior Government minister (Gordy Boy, Ally-Pally or even, God forbid, Mandy) standing up and giving a succinct summary of the problems, a straightforward analysis of the proposed solution, and setting out what they will DO, plus how ordinary simple folk like me will be affected. But please, an end to saying they are listening and will do whatever it takes. (Trebbles all round, and pass the Beano please)

Could it be that they have no understanding, so cannot set a plan, and therefore are clueless about the impact. Surely not.

Oh, and another thing, do you think any of them read these blogs? Hello there in Downing Street ... is there anybody in there, just nod if you can hear me, is there anyone at home? (As David Gilmour and Roger Waters put it in 1979)
British banks bailed out 1:34pm on 03 Oct 2008 Post # 23, YummyCarolKirkwood, you are spot on. Interest rates are, and have been for some time, too low. The forest fire that is raging throughout the financial markets was started, in part at least, because dimwits were being encouraged, by other dimwits, to borrow money at stupidly low rates.

Debt needs to be brought under control, both at personal and corporate levels.

What's next I wonder? God knows as far as the convoluted financial instruments that banks have conning each other with, but as far as personal debt is concerned, how about credit card debt. More dimwits over far too many years have been cranking up their debit balances to fund meals out, drinks down the nags head, petrol in their cars, white goods, cash withdrawals etc. And this debt just rolls over and rolls over, one of the most pernicious forms of debt yet available to the common dimwit, sorry I mean common man. How much is owed on all the credit cards in the UK, does anybody know?

An yes, post #25 made me smile too.
