Brown's right royal dilemma 01:11am on 06 May 2009 The UK is pretty well stuffed at every level. The only answer will be to inflict reality on those people expecting a nice pension - it won't happen.

Sooner or later the UK govt will not be allowed to borrow any more money and at that point it's time to get used to a much, much lower standard of living.

Indeed...economic growth from 2007 levels will never be seen again. Growth of any sort will only show up if we slump and get used to a much lower standard of living (in consumption terms anyway, maybe we'll all be happier).

Let's hope it gets bad enough for us to question the whole model we live by and come up with something a bit more rewarding than buying more rubbish than we did last year.

Who put them in that position? Did they walk off with the real value in the company when they swapped it for debt? Totally criminal.

Still, hopefully Gordon can get us all borrowing again as that's surely what's best for us all. Not.

It's their duty don't they know to spend, spend, spend. There is no tomorrow so best get on with it!
Weep for Woolies 09:29am on 27 Nov 2008 Why should the government step in at all? Why mention it? The more they step in the worse it will be.

We need to clear all these crappy shops out of the way - I'm sad to see Woolies go, a friend will lose their job. But we have an economy with 70 odd % consumption. That will have to drop below 50%, surely. So we'll no doubt see the back of many, many more, especially those that thought it was a good idea to mortgage themselves to the hilt.

It's a good job many private companies don't run the same way as they might be the only ones left standing when this finishes.
