24 hours with Ubuntu 11:31am on 24 Oct 2009 Did you manage to install Compiz? It gives you a 3-d desktop and so many windows management functions it's impossible to list them all. Once you've spent a few days working with such a great interface it's hard to go back to a flat clunky windows system.

Will T'Orange be good for shoppers? 2:09pm on 09 Sep 2009 I hope the UK market doesn't end up like the Canadian one - 3 big players all with a 'gentlemen's agreement' not to undercut one another, making up ridiculous extra fees like the 'system access fee' or incoming text message fees.

The british mobile market seems very healthy and I doubt this will damage it.
The watchphone: Gadget or gimmick? 1:38pm on 20 Aug 2009 At £500 its a gimmick. But I'm sure in time the idea of a phone in your watch could catch on. They'll eventually get smaller and cheaper and be able to be housed within a watch without being too expensive.

I would certainly rather have one in my watch than have to carry it around all day.
The day Twitter stopped 7:33pm on 07 Aug 2009 It does appear that this was politically motivated now which means that the story is important, even beyond 'technology' news.

I don't see what the problem is though when it comes to reporting about Twitter. If it's not important, go and read your tech news somewhere else and the beeb will eventually notice a drop in readership and will respond. If you want to complain about something, complain about the segregation of UK and international users!
Too European? 7:42pm on 01 Aug 2009 Why don't you read the bible before deciding what it says about women etc? The religious right in America do not necessarily reflect the bible accurately.
Changes to international pages (4) 9:15pm on 04 Jul 2009 I will reword a comment I made on one of the previous blogs:

Why not offer the editions as before, but warn UK users that when they visit the International Edition that pages it will not be 'optimised' for them, they will see grey boxes or something similar where International Users would see ads.

Let International users visit the UK edition but warn them that there will be links they can't follow, and video content they can't watch. That way you only use geo-ip to decide whether or not to show ads or block video content.

In short, there is no technical reason why basing editions on geo-ip makes any sense. You do not need 4 different versions as this post implies, you just need 2! which is what you have now anyway.

It is so simple. If your technicians can't figure that one out then I suggest you find alternative web developers.

But I suspect there are other, less technical reasons why you feel the need to block content depending on whether someone is in the UK or not.
Changes to international pages (2) 10:41am on 16 Jun 2009 I wonder if there are less comments on this second post because people have carried out their threats to go to other sites for their news? I hope it's that rather than people have just given up and realised that nobody is going to listen.

But one more time I will reiterate how I feel about this: There is no technical reason why you cannot give users the chance to override the default versions served to their IP address. None. Nada.

The reason is clearly something other than technical, and I think that if you were honest with your customers you'd get a better response.

For UK users:

Put a link saying "International Version". When clicked, user sees everything as if from a non-uk ip address, except ads which are replaced with grey boxes.

For International Users:

Allow them to click a 'UK version' link. Perhaps make a note popup on the site saying that not all content will be available.
Where there is video content and/or rights-managed content, simply display a grey box.

That seems to be a sensible solution. The two versions exist anyway, why not allow people the choice to choose between them? You can then display ads/video/grey boxes depending on their IP address.

Just make sure that they are told that they are not seeing the 'recommended' version, and you are not responsible for any accidents/confusion that may result from them thinking they are in the UK when they are in fact somewhere else (or vice versa)

I'm sure you'll get far less complaints about grey boxes than you have this last week.
