Trailer Treachery 5:52pm on 22 Oct 2009 The most obvious example i can think of is The Phantom Menace. After seeing the trailer, I thought the movie was going to be GOOD!
Northern exposure 6:19pm on 04 Sep 2009 I watched Planet Of The Apes at the Grant Museum in UCL, surrounded by the carcasses of dead animals. Spooky.

In the Realm of James Ferman 9:27pm on 24 Aug 2009 Just wondering what Mark made of the Avatar trailer, and also all the critisism of it.

Personally, i think it looks like a million other things, and the fact that it's in 3D means absolutely nothing to me. What i find strange, however, is the amount of hype around the film, with people like James Cameron, and Empire magazine (shudder) stating that it's going to change cinema forever. The last film that had these claims made about it was The Matrix Reloaded, which, it turned out, used the same techniques, yet again, only too frequently and not as well.

Also, the critisisms of the film seem to revolve around how the CGI doesn't look 'photo realistic', but more like a video game. Well you know what looks really really real? Real stuff! Let's stop with all this uninvolving, uncharacteristic, CGI crap, and get back to using real people and real objects. I think 3D films like Avatar are ruining cinema and making it into little more than a fairground ride.

And anyway, when did James Cameron become this amazing cinematic visionary? Sure, he made the Terminator films and Aliens, which are a lot of fun, and Titanic is the most successful film of all time (because 14 year old girls thought Leo looked gorgeous and went back time after time to gaze at his beautiful little androgynous face). But, come on, he's hardly Stanley Kubrick, and all his films are merely entertaining technological achievements, rather than great films. Lets stop all the hype, and get back to making good films, with interesting characters and plots (in 2D please).
The Boorman/Tarantino Nexus 7:32pm on 17 Aug 2009 Has the film had it's title changed to 'Inglourious' in all countries, or is this just in the UK? Bastard (erd), for historical reasons, is regarded as being a more offensive word in the UK than it is in America. I've often seen the word 'bastard' used on early-evening American television, whereas here it is generally not used before 9pm, even though Americans are much more uptight about language.

PS: I hope QT calls his next film 'Kiss My Fanny', just to see if the title would be changed to 'Kiss My...' in the UK.
Forgotten Masterpiece: Cannibal (Piranha) Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death 5:22pm on 18 Apr 2009 One small point. Bill Maher no longer has a show called Politically Incorrect, due to the fact that he made a rude comment about a certain part of Hillary Clinton's anatomy.

But, he does have a new show on HBO called Real Time, and its fantastic,
Reviews Bonanza: Anvil, Gran Torino and Che Part Two 12:37pm on 03 Mar 2009 The real crime that Benicio Del Toro was guilty of was the crime of playing a communist who wasnt the movie's bad guy. The Oscars dont take any risks on politicval subjects.

For goodness sake, when Brokwback Mountain came out a couple of years ago (my miles the best picture nominated) they didn't give it the award because the movie had a couple of men smooching! Without tongues!
The Kermode Awards and You 6:09pm on 27 Feb 2009 I thought Wall-E was the best movie of last year. It is a fantastic critique of our culture since the Thatcher/Reagan era, that has taken on even greater significance since this DEPRESSION started.
More Points of You: Part One 01:00am on 17 Jan 2009 Am i the only person who thinks that Slumdog Millionaire is getting a little too much praise? I saw the movie and really enjoyed it - its massively entertaining and completely absorbing, but all this talk about it being a 'masterpiece' is irritating me slightly.

I was also shocked to hear you saying that Silent Running was one of your favourite films of all time. Its fine - and has an excellent ending, but it is also a film with massive problems - the worst being the terrible over-acting. Just why exactly do you rate it so highly? Is it a guilty pleasure (we all have them)?

Incidentally, does anyone else have a guilty pleasure, a film they can't admit to liking? For me its the 1966 Batman movie. I think its one of the funniest movies ever made and massively influential when you look at many modern clever/stupid comedies.
Points of You: Part Two 5:45pm on 13 Jan 2009 I quite enjoyed Rambo too. The action was hilariously OTT. It was like Mamma Mia for boys - gloriously awful.
