Obama visits a slavery church 03:25am on 12 Jul 2009 You might review the blog "War and Cultural Dysfunction: Stories About Five Generations of My Southern Family." It's a very interesting serialization of one woman's memoirs as far back as the "War Between the States." Included are stories about surprising archelogical finds as well as the culture in the South over the last several generations.

Sinister robocalls 01:51am on 20 Oct 2008 Is it just me or are some of you having the same problem of this website losing its integrity? I don't mean the content of the posts; I'm referring to the various boxes shifting on the page and encroaching on top of the posts.

Could it be the blogging software? Webhost? What's the deal?

Thank you for your response, though I was a bit puzzled by it since we seem to share a sincere appreciation of Gen. Powell and his endorsement statement. I was trying to read this entire set of posts in my earlier sitting, and, unfortunately, missed your #s 375 and 383 the first run through.

Sorry for any miscommunication. Did I use the wrong expression "held no punches?" It was my intent to recognize his style. It's somewhat familiar to me.

The senior officers, including a general now and then, who filled my living room while I was growing up, and then the senior executives, including vice presidents, who I partner with in my career, all speak clearly and directly.

General Powell, like my father, had an unwavering loyalty to his Commander-in-Chief and I believe Bush used that against him to perpetuate a lie. It was not naivete, it was trust and honor.

Are we on to Powell's endorsement of Obama yet? What I've read online so far tells me his statement held no punches, particularly when it came to the Republican Party, McCain, and Palin.

I'm off to get the Sunday paper so I can really enjoy. It's bright and sunny in Oregon before the rains start again tomorrow.

Sinister robocalls 09:21am on 19 Oct 2008 I have received automated phone calls and text messages on my cell phone. For those of us who are completely wireless, (there's a whole lot of us) political robocalls are not only invasive, annoying, and insulting, they are also costly (minutes). That would make me angry if a political campaign started costing me money. But, of course, the McCain campaign didn't think of that!

The Third US Presidential Debate - Live 05:26am on 16 Oct 2008 A few small points:

For those who still claim to be undecided, they must either refuse to educate themselves, refuse to allow themselves to be educated, or they're just too dumb to vote.

What I will remember most about this particular debate will be the extraordinary discipline Obama exhibited when he would make a statement, listen to McCain's complete distortions, and then calmly respond with clarification. That's a skill needed in international diplomacy.

McCain is a very small man and tonight he truly showed how unqualified he is to lead this nation. He is a true politician; he'll say absolutely anything to get elected. He may have gotten in more information this time, however, I think, like Palin, he was well coached. They are cut from the same cloth. Descriptors like honorable and gentlemanly do not apply. They may have once, but not now and now is what counts.
How McCain wins 06:31am on 10 Oct 2008 There's been much comparison of these times to the Great Depression.

I take a different perspective and compare them to pre-American Revolutionary times. Now, historians, I'm thinking of the emotional climate more than I am going point by point on economics and so forth. From what I've read, back then, there were also incendiary personalities who whipped up the fears and prejudices of ignorant mobs. Nothing has changed; that toxic undercurrent has remained close enough to the surface for Palin to easily fan the fire. We are now seeing her real function in all of this.

This new revolutionary is a perfect storm so violent that it, like the first American Revolution, will have far reaching implications.

These are very exciting times. We have an opportunity to enjoy them and relish the potential to leap forward into another even greater phase of our growth. We are, by comparison, such a young country, a teenager, compared to the ancient cultures we patronize. Our bad attitudes got us into trouble.

Now we can mature, swallow our pride, take our losses and be the better for it.
