Freethinkers welcome! 06:18am on 21 Jan 2009 Spirituality is a very personal thing, often quite separate from religion. It's hard to publicly address everybody in the same sentence. But no matter where we settle on the spirituality spectrum, we can always find common ground. Parents of every spiritual persuasion want a better world for their children.

I'm hoping Obama will set a good example of inclusion and civilized debate - it will remind us to treat each other better as fellow citizens. I'm impressed by how he and Michelle put their family first above all else. It's a great example and reminder to the rest of us of what our priorities should be.
Iconography of Obama 9:25pm on 19 Jan 2009 It's certainly underplayed in my local media. Being a republican stronghold here, people just aren't as excited about it. However, I can say that even the republicans out here are willing to give Obama a chance and support him as our president.
I'm glad that Obama seems willing to listen and work with those that disagree with him. It's also encouraging that he has a broader focus than just Western ideals. If we must be a superpower, it's better to be benevolent, tolerant, and knowledgable instead of arrogant.
Obama's intriguing CIA pick 02:42am on 07 Jan 2009 I'm willing to give Panetta a chance. Maybe part of our problems here is that we keep hiring the same types of people for the same jobs and then we expect different results. A little personality change might be good for us.

And we're all glad your boy is alright Justin. It's a big adjustment, but at least it's something that can be treated. Best of luck and our prayers are with you.
The durable American brand 02:17am on 13 Dec 2008 This recession could be good for us. Maybe it will help us remember that there's a lot more to life than buying and selling. Hopefully we'll give up our obsession with brands and just learn to appreciate a good product regardless of the tag. Practically every decision in this country boils down to money somewhere. Maybe that will change and we'll start valuing time with our families above the value of money.

As my husband's grandpa liked to say, "A little pain now & then never hurt anybody".

It's admirable that Obama made it through his Chicago years with his honesty seemingly intact.
Connections and patronage 3:38pm on 10 Dec 2008 Chicago has never been a bastion of political honesty. Unless the honest citizens of Chicago stand up & do something to clean it up from the inside, there's little the rest of the nation can do for them.
Change we can believe in? 3:22pm on 08 Dec 2008 Sounds good to me - some of our roads & bridges haven't been repaired since they were built in the 50s. We drive our new shiny gas guzzling SUVs on crumbling bridges and then wonder why they collapse.

Unfortunately, these guys chose to surrender at the wrong courthouse. Salt Lake county is very Democrat - Utah's only Democratic Congressman represents that area. They didn't quite do their research on that one... oops.
The tax debate continues 10:18pm on 02 Dec 2008 There are still some places in the US where you can't pay at the pump - I live near a decent size town that doesn't have a gas station at all and the residents have to drive 15 miles away to get it.

But it does strike me as odd that you couldn't pay at the pump so close to London.
Taxing issues 1:51pm on 01 Dec 2008 Printing more money isn't a solution. Neither are taxes if they're spent badly. The problem isn't a lack of money, it's that we're a selfish nation.

If we'd all been a little more honest with ourselves (i.e. - I cannot afford this house, therefore I will not buy it) we could have avoided becoming foreclosure central.

If corporation and bank executive would be a little less selfish (i.e. 50 zillion dollars a year salary is more than enough, I can't possibly use it all and should use some of it to rescue my company instead of begging the government for more) we'd probably pull out of the recession tomorrow.
