I hope this gets picked up by the BBC and other news sites, unlike the Daily Mail's current cannabis lies.. How does a paper get away with printing such blatant falsehoods with being prosecuted ? I can never understand this.

Fully agreed with and worried about.

This is definitely about more than why are the drugs separated in harm just because two are legal.

The fact that government policy has now been openly admitted (by the government) to be purely based on what the government wants us to believe instead of the actual truth should get everyone up complaining not just the people who think the drug policy is wrong.

Regarding the relative harm between the 2 legal drugs and the range of illegal drugs there is always one thing that the figures seem to forget to mention.

The legal drugs which kill and seriously harm thousands every year and will continue to kill and seriously harm thousands each year are produced in controlled regulated environments, to strict quality measures.

While the illegal drugs that even the governments figures admit do nowhere near the amount of harm compared to legal ones, are produced with no control, no regulated environments and definitely no quality control measures... Yet they are STILL safer, Can anyone imagine just how much LESS harm these illegal drugs would cause if they were produced to the same standards as legal drugs are made to with guaranteed strength and quality. Instead of being knocked up by a bunch of criminals somewhere with no real regard for the end result.

Just to add... Where did he call for cannabis to be legalised. He pointed out the truth that alcohol and tobacco are MORE harmful than cannabis and that there are more deaths per year from horse riding than from taking ecstasy.

He never said that cannabis is safe or that it should be legal.... Mainly that the drugs should be ranked by genuine harm, NOT by just political desire and that alcohol and tobacco should not be separated from being ranked with other harmful drugs.

Sorry you seem to have the wrong idea of what's going on here.

Your views are yours, but I have to ask... do you really think it's correct to sack someone for telling the truth.

Regardless of your personal views on drugs. This is basically this issue here. The Prof. Nutt was sacked for telling the government the plain truth, which the governments own figures support as the truth, yet he was still sacked because it did not fit the party line.

It's as easy to write to your MP as it is to write in this blog... In fact it's even EASIER as you don't have to sign in or make an account.

There is a wonderful site here http://www.writetothem.com/ which by putting in your postcode will show you your relevant MP and then all you do is click on their name and it opens up with a type in box... just like here and you can fill it in... preview your message and then click send knowing it will go to your MP and you "should" get a reply back.

PLEASE if you really feel passionate enough about this farce to post here then I can see no reason for you NOT to send the same info to your MP.

Typing here is getting a small amount of coverage especially as a lot of people here already feel the same way (what's the business speak phrase.. Preaching to the choir...), sending the same info direct to your MP will maybe... just maybe do a bit more.

Get typing and get your voices heard... PLEASE !!

Can this idiot Johnson really not see that all he has done is promote the use of illegal drugs and breaking the law if you want to do yourself less harm.

He has openly admitted that the government policy is NOT based of fact or real harm compared to the legal drugs we are promoted to use, that by using legal drugs you are risking far more harm to yourself than if you use illegal drugs and that the entire government drug policy is based on lies and lining the pockets of the government and various lobby interest groups, NOT on saving anyone's health.

From a health point of view I have to break the law and use illegal drugs as they are doing me less harm than the legal drugs alcohol and tobacco which the government is more than happy to keep selling and taxing

How come the BBC which "claims" to be impartial is reporting this story exactly the way the government and the tories want it reported... slanting the figures and reporting to suit the "official line!"

CommunityCriminal I see that there is no sign of your petition on the site yet... I bet this will get quietly "lost" as they have no interest in hearing what the population they are supposed to be serving really wants.

Re-instate Prof. Nutt and sack Alan Johnson for failing to follow any form of honest ethical reasoning... The pure cheek of sacking Prof. Nutt because the honest report that legal drugs are actually MORE harmful than many illegal drugs does not agree with the governments carefully built pile of lies and deceit.

Get this bunch out of office ASAP.

The government expert tells the truth and just because it proves that the so called drug policy is based totally on politics and lobbying and has nothing to do with the harm that various drugs both legal and illegal cause. The government response is to sack him.... How much more pathetic can you get.

Sack the lot of this money grabbing, thieving, surveillance mad control freaks that claim to be our government.... even though the PM was never elected by anyone in the UK.

Yes and far more dangerous than a lot of the currently illegal drugs are if they were produced under that same situation (perfectly legal, commercially produced). Even with the contamination and unknown strengths "drugs" still kill less people per year the alcohol and tobacco do.

As you have said alcohol kills thousands and thousands each year. Cannabis has killed none per year and yet I'm only allowed by the government to take the drug that kills. Not the drugs that are proved to be safer.

The governments own drug advisory group are some of the people who agree that alcohol and tobacco are far more dangerous than other drugs.

Shame that no-one from the "anti-legal" side is able to come up with any reason that might give the current laws any form of justification.

I personally refuse to follow a set of laws that have no basis in fact at all and have been proved to be harmful for the majority of the population in general around the world (from farmers trying to make a living all the way through to the the people being killed by contaminated drugs or killed by the criminals being supported by the prohibition).

Quick pause while I refill my second favorite drug... Caffeine.
(Or could be first, can never quite decide)

I fully agree with you and it's not just the propaganda of drugs the children are being battered with. The one that really gets/worries me is the current one of "Every single male is a pedophile and children must report anything they suspect to be dodgy to the local council etc."

How many councils are now using underage children to spy and report on anything that might be called "suspicious". Still I'm getting off topic here.

Does anyone here know how to get in touch with Mark Easton? As the only way I can see is to ask in these blogs, but that gets no answer.
