Banks must invest trust in Scottish clubs 2:03pm on 01 Nov 2009 adma67 - i'll tell you what's pathetic: Bitter anti-oldfirm fans whining about how the Old Firm are still better than them, even though they are as bad as they have ever been. If your team had any ambition, this would be their oppertunity to catch-up, no? Fact is you need the Old Firm to survive financially and you'd be part-time without our crowds and media coverage.

What i don't understand is how the banks are quite happy to bail out sides like Liverpool, who have debts far bigger than even Rangers - even allowing them to spend £18 million on a right-back! Yet they threaten Rangers with administration???

Why doesn't the Scottish media/ banks / business invest and support it's national sport?
Old Firm flight not so fanciful 2:39pm on 13 Oct 2009 No media company in the world would want to pay the cash for a non-Old Firm SPL - the entire market is about 50,00 people.
With no TV coverage and no Old Firm pay-days, money would very quickly dry-up and i fear the SPL would become part-time or disolve completely.
Also the clubs will be so poor and the co-efficent would drop so much, that no Scottish club would qualify through the European peliminary rounds ever again.

No matter how much you may dislike the Old Firm, only a fool couldn't see that the very existence and economy of Scottish football are entirely dependant on them.

This is a true fact - nothing to do with football, but true.

Transfer deadline day Q&A 2:41pm on 02 Sep 2009 I swear i saw Franck Ribery in Glasgow yesterday before the transfer window shut. Clearly it wasn't him, but the resemblence was uncanny!

Scotland must rediscover the joy of football 01:31am on 15 Aug 2009 I don't think our players are particuarly bad, i think we've just got a poor manager of the national team and an outdated football association that is more concerned with stuffy regulations than supporting it's own players and clubs.

Isn't amazing how our mood has changed so drastically from the periods of success enjoyed by walter Smith and Alex McLeish as national coach? All that good work has been undone by Burley and because we have no money, our game is suffering a dip on both international and club level.

If we had an authority with the vision to bring some decent money into our game, instead of the current bunch begging for scraps at the table of our neighbours down south, maybe we could improve our grassroots game further and continue to improve in European club competition and (with a new manager) in the international arena too.
Spanning the South American age spectrum 2:37pm on 27 Jul 2009 Good blog - i think this demonstrates the problems that the vast spending on imported players by European clubs has caused. It reaches a stage where a country loses all it's best players and the league is in decline. The high value of wages and transfers effectively prices clubs from these nations out of buying any players, even up and coming ones from their own nation! This is common in South America, but is also beginning to happen in Europe's smaller leagues - Holland, Belgium, Scotland, Austria are all leagues reduced to a bit-part role in European competition because the majority of their best players are taken away at a young age. Even these countries biggest clubs cannot afford to sign them, so are they are forced into playing youngsters or the only transfers they can afford - cheap journeymen.

It is to the benefit of the game as a whole that there must be a limit placed on imported foreign players. This constant importing destroys entire countries leagues and also limits the oppertunities for youth at the clubs spending big to bring in the next 'wonderkid'. Platini had the right idea with his '6+5 rule', but it was critisized by big spending sides in Europes big leagues - mainly for their own greed.

What do you think Phil? - is it time to limit this mass exodus of players to the big leagues around Europe?
Stately Perez defends big spending 7:05pm on 18 Jul 2009 English clubs are as much to blame for hiking up the prices as anybody. But now Real are spending more than them it's an 'outcry'?
They at least have some homegrown players in among the galacticos.
The English league has only 20% English players, yet now you are calling for wage-caps and rules for foreign imports?
The EPL would be in serious trouble if these rules were brought in.
The whole arguement reaks of double-standards and sour-grapes.
FA avoids major doping row 5:58pm on 10 Jul 2009 Is there such a thing as grassroots football in England? Don't see too much evidence of it in the Premier League, with all these foreign players, managers and owners. You'd be better off spending all the money on drug-testing....
