Gloomy news 4:56pm on 10 Nov 2009 This is the real underlying political debate for the next poitical generation, how do we create an effective economic structure to provide employment, generate tax revenues, alleviate poverty and to ensure social inclusion. Currently in Scotland, the state is simply too large to be sustainable as we seek to invest in the industries of the future. Like it or not, we as a nation must seek to foster an environment whereby wealth creation is seen as something worthy of respect and not derision. How we do that will see us soar towards levels of prosperity or be continually dragged back by the actions of Westminster dinosaurs. However, before we see the rhetoric, we'll never have a sovereign wealth fund of Norwegian scale, so we have to build "businesses" and these can be private, state or third sector. As Brian says, if council officials can be encouraged to think outside of the box, then we all can.
The plebiscite to end all plebiscites 5:47pm on 08 Oct 2009 Can't really agree with Brian's verdict, that The Viking will prevail. It's the next generation of Lib-dems who are agitating for a referendum, not the cosy incumbents. At the national conference, I would say that a decent number of prospective candidates felt there was nothing to lose in at least exploring the referendum issue... and possibly a lot to gain. Unless the Viking is mature in his approach to this issue, there is a real risk of this becoming a festering divisive issue which will ultimately only boost the Nationalist cause.
'OK pal, outside, now' 5:20pm on 08 Oct 2009 So that's it then, the kind Viking is doing his massive u-turn, kicking and screaming and hey presto we get the referendum. You couldn't make it up - the level of consistency and lack of intellectual rigour amongst the so-called Unionost parties is quite simply shocking. As Wendy used to say, bring it on, can't wait myself.
Trusting the trust 4:05pm on 01 Oct 2009 SFT is a bit of an albatross now. Seems a bit like pre the last Holyrood elections when labour couldn't come close to addressing the failings of their plans for council tax. Joe Fitzpatrick was at a loss on Jocknight this week as he clearly knew little about SFT and its future role. I suspect SFT will enter popular lore in the same way that PPP, PFI etc have done. That is of course unless anyone in the SNP can actually justify the future role that SFT will play. I doubt it somehow, since even until recently, the FM thought the oil sheikhs in the middle east would somehow come to his aid.
A lack of trust in recovery 4:47pm on 21 Sep 2009 Bit of a pr spin that you've bought into on the Alliance Trust figures. The results are shocking, being 6% behind the benchmark over the six months and trailing into the depths of returns from comparable trusts. Going to be tough for them to dig their way out of this performance hole - usually +/- 1% would be acceptable for a low risk trust such as this. Looks like they missed the bottom of the market by a long distance and it's unlikely we're ever going back to the levels of the market seen six months ago.

If you had cared to read my post, rather than adopting the usual nationalist defensive posture, you would have seen "We need some sort of old fashioned industrial policy to provide proper workforce protection". That would appear to be my suggestion, Fairly simple to understand when you read it.
Daily disposable workers 4:17pm on 09 Sep 2009 no 3, if you think you can run an industrial and economic policy by chasing ambulances, then good luck to you. To see how inward investment should be managed, have a look at the Irish body and the newish magnet in Hungary. Shows it can be done, we sort of don't relly turn up at the match.
Daily disposable workers 10:28am on 08 Sep 2009 Got to be said that the company is a world leader and has invested substantial funds in the plant over the years. But, as usual, someone else has offered better terms, this time Waterford in Ireland who get the prize of remaining open (only after undercutting Scottish Enterprise). Point is though that 500 job losses here equates to a net increase in staff at the other manufacturing plant in Rochester of 30!!
Unbelievable. But, just how inefficient are these plants that you can wipe them out and to quote the company "The long-term cost savings alone are hundreds of millions of dollars"? The only good news for the workforce is that the phased closure will take place over the next 14 to 18 months, but only to protect disruption to product supplies!
Quite simply a tragedy and once these companies go, they don't come back. Ever.
We need some sort of old fashioned industrial policy to provide proper workforce protection. As usual, Scottish Enterprise are asleep on the job.
Through a glass, darkly 11:37pm on 04 Aug 2009 Hopefully Wee-Scamp won't be too close to the power base of an independent Scotland. No, we won't be nationalising second rate supermarket suppliers, or banks, or bust building societies, or rail companies, or newspaper groups or anything. We'll be investing in the global industries of tomorrow.
Paper profits and prophets 09:11am on 14 May 2009 Douglas, rather than googling the demise of newspaper titles in the US, why don't you pop up to Dundee and meet withh D C Thomson. Profits of £60m for the last year with no concerns over excess borrowings or lack of investment in titles. Shows how it should be done. They're the only likely buyer/owner of The Herald and Scotsman, so better get to know them.
